When you are next in the South Dan (that's to the bottom of your screen, if you had doubts) let me educate you in the benefits of direction of travel orientation and navigation (especially in 3D). wink

Another option is the best of both worlds: I've used my TomTom in 'direction of travel' mode to give directions whilst having the in-built sat nav provide a much wider 'north up' view to give the benefits of general location information. nerd

I like the main Nav display in my Porsche 3D track up and the smaller display in the instrument binnacle 2D North up.

The little screen is brill.

DOT on guidance, set to go to split screen (overview & zoom in) at junctions. North if guidance not active. One thing on all sat-navs i've seen is why landscape mode. if set to DOT surely would be better in portrait mode so you can see further ahead, traffic alerts, diversion etc.

Always North oriented. Keeps up spatial awareness, and makes it much easier to take over in case nav data are crap or in case of detours. In addition the direction of travel map rotation is annoying, too much animation.

3D DOT for me. Purely because when pressing on you can evaluate the sharpness of an upcoming bend with a very quick glance and see where the overtaking opportunities lie. I find it particularly helpful on roads like the A702 Abington to Edinburgh which, for instance, I will use a few times a year, but rarely memorise where the best overtaking straights are.

Direction of travel is infinitely easier for following directions.

I revert to "north-up" when looking for my location in relation to somewhere else.

Which way are tulip diagrams drawn? I thought they were always D.O.T.

Never heard of them, I had to google. Apparently they can be either http://www.historicroadrally.co.uk/hrcr/navigation...

I was 38 when I got my first car with nav, up until then I'd travelled the country using maps or mostly the end of my nose and asking people when you got near to the place, I was quite good at it. I fear though that the last 8-9 years I've lost that ability.

Oh and always direction of travel.
And you've never been on time in your whole life.... ;-)

North-up, absolutely. Orientation to direction of travel is bloody irritating.

Thankfully, my current cars don't have even the most basic form of satnav. I've decided I'd rather live without it.

When I look at a road atlas, north is at the top. However, when I drive my car and through the windscreen, it's heading in the direction of travel so that's how my satnav is orientated.
