I have one of these, I've done 150,000 in it and still enjoy driving it

Get the 4.2 The A8 is a lovely place to be on a motorway
A good friend of mine had one of these for a few years on a 54 plate. It was fantastic in every way. He could knock on the door of 30mpg's on a run. Every imaginable thing you could need in a car.

Volvo S60 or S80 D5. Great seats, brilliant stereo, good economy, reliable and no real massively expensive faults. The S80 in particular is excellent for long distance runs, just make sure you get SE / SE Lux spec with 17" wheels.
You should be able to get a decent one with sensible miles and great history for £6-£7k. You'll get a far younger and lower mileage example for your money than with a BMW/Audi/Merc due to them being deeply unfashionable and having no chav prestige like a cheap old German car.

If its commuting, buy cheap and many times
If it's a work car/car allowance, get something diesel and comfy, Volvos are generally good at this price point. I've done both of the above, the commuting cars included a Pug 307, a Rover 25, a 206, a Mondeo. Work cars have included a 5 series, 3 series, Vectra, Passat...standard rep mobile stuff
The most comfy car I've had I think was an S Type, it's a close call between that and an S60. The S60 seemed to have a few tweaks here and there on the seat that I never got quite right. I suffer a bit of back pain driving if I'm not comfrtable and mostly it's to do with the seat bottom being too far up or down at the front. Fix that and generally everything else is fine
