S60 D5?

I keep hearing Volvo seats are second to none.
Yep, inclined to agree, we ran a V70 D5 as a work horse/van and it was excellent.

Would 100% recommend.
Have another recommendation for a Volvo, amazingly comfortable seats for long motorways schleps, Wales to Aberdeen was no bother in a V70 in one shot smile
Not everyone finds Volvo seats to be so great. I reckon Subaru are better, and having just got back from a day-long 650km schlep in the CX9, I can confirm I prefer Mazda seats to those in the V70. Might not be just the seats as I think the V70 driving position is just a bit lop-sided whereas the two Japs are straight-on. Also, McIntosh stereo in the Lib was much better than the V70 ICE.

In other words, we're not all the same, so test drive for an appropriately long length of time.

I've got an A4 with the sports seats which I rank with my old Rover 800 and Dad's XJ8 for comfort.

I rate it on motorways very highly, the ride could be a little better on really poor surfaces but it's better than expected and it's more to do with the one flaw in a surprisingly refined car considering it's compact dimensions and 4 cylinder engine. I've done 180 miles, a 12 hour day and 180 miles home several times with no aches or pains.

Having changed jobs I tend to do 10 hours commuting a week in it. 2 litre FSI means about 35 mpg average which is acceptable considering no DPF or turbo to worry about and it's now upto 183,000 miles.

The tyre wear is pretty high though about 15K per conti at over £100 each with completely even wear.

I bought my XJ6 (a 2003 X350 3.0V6) for that. Best seats I've ever used, and I've had Saabs too, and more importantly it's quiet, fairly economical and the ventilation is absolutely great. Don't underestimate the value of silence, and the great ride.

Something a little out of the ordinary, but having driven one from New York to Pittsboro, NC (nearly 500 miles in 1 go)recently, I thought it was pretty good.

Whilst I expect the answer is probably something like an S80 or S60, if you wanted to take a punt on something a little bit more leftfield, may I suggest a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland CRD (2005-2010). I have just returned from the Alps in my 2007 model (with just shy of 125,000 miles on the clock) and it has not put a foot wrong in the year and a bit since I bought it. In terms of motorway driving advantages:

1. It eats miles quietly (once up to speed;
2. is quick enough (215bhp Mercedes 3.0 V6 CRD - so 0-60 in about 9 seconds and comfortable cruise at 70+);
3. It comes as standard with climate control, heated seats, sat-nav, cruise control, a good stereo, automatic wipers, auto dimming mirrors;
4. The seats are comfy; and
5. High viewing position.

It's not the most economical, but it isn't bad on a long drive. On the round trip to the Alps, including going up and down the mountain, I averaged over 29mpg.

You'd get a decent one for £7,000 I'm sure.

Most comfortable motorway journey I ever did was in an Auto Toyota Avensis. Only Birmingham to Essex but I got out and literally felt like I hadn't even been driving. I'd say its definitely the seats that are the most important thing.

The very, very best motorway car is one with alternate yellow and blue patches all over it and flashing lights attached to the roof. Anything else is just another boringmobile.

At that budget, I'd suggest an Ecoflex spec CDTI Insignia on the standard 17" wheels.

The most stable and relaxed car I've driven on the motorway in that spec, and capable of 800 miles to a tank.
+1, having driven one from Cornwall to London one afternoon.
Ticks lots of boxes, comfortable seat, refined, nice ride & good mpg.
Can get a fresh car for your budget too.

I know it's well below your price range, but I have a 2005 Vectra cdti with 88k on the clocks that I'm looking to shift on very soon!

I do exactly that sort of mileage each week - currently have a Citroen C4 diesel but prior to that did 500+ miles a week for three years in a classic Impreza Turbo 2000. Admittedly I have the Citroen now to recover from the ruinous expense!

Audi A6 le mans - facelift, 3 litre diesel, quattro. Lovely.

Skoda Superb - estate form factor much prettier than saloon.

VW Phaeton. If you're not a badge snob. Audi A8, if you are.

5 Series BMW e60
Is your A6 recommendation an estate or saloon? Do you have a link to an example please?

Are you guys kidding me?? The Insignia must me one of the worst and most disappointing cars I've ever had the misfortune of driving!

Had one as a hire car once and honestly, there were no redeeming features. It's ugly, slow (CDTi), poor rear visibility, seats aren't especially good, it's noisy at speed, the dash is awful, stereo was rubbish and the seats were average at best. Bloody awful thing.

Saloon, unless you need all-that-boot. There's one in the classifieds for 6.5K, which is very cheap! (but no full heated leather)..

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a...

Facelift has DRL's and 'pinched' rear LED lights.

Le Mans spec has custom alloys, 30mm ride drop, MMI-High, interior LED's, cruise..

Can't beat all-weather quattro for motorway snoozing..

I'd be going for a lovely XJ (diesel) such as the one below:
