This by far if it counts as a Mercedes, but it probably doesn't. Otherwise the 300SL or maybe the 300SLR for a racing fan.

ETA: That's for "iconic"; "important" is a different thing and the answer is probably some S-class for the amount of now-common technology it introduced.

Basic engineering at it's finest.
Nothing basic about that wink
Bizarrely, I'm undecided between a beat up diesel W123 taxi and the gullwing SL for most iconic Merc.

For most important in terms of MB's future, I would go along with the poster who said the 80's 190.

As usual with these topics, 50% of the posts are an attempt to fit with the topic, the other 50% are people just posting their favourites.

I'll post one for both viewpoints biggrin

A truly global Mercedes; they're everywhere.

Is there an iconic Mercedes ? They made many great cars but I doubt there is an iconic one that Joe public can reel off, like say the Saab 900 Turbo, BMW M3 , Lotus Esprit, Ferrari Testarossa, Ford Sierra Cosworth etc etc

I think the Mercedes 300 Sl is a far more inconic than all those cars and I think it is among the most iconic cars in history.

Most important would have to be W123/4 diseasal in 4/5cylinder format - you see them every time you go on holiday in Spain or Greece!

Most iconic has to be 300 SLR from the 50s - fantastic engineering!

Not on topic, but most disappointing was my automatic W202 C280 "Sport" - POS! laugh
