I do a ton of miles and this is getting silly now. I do not believe doing 95mph is the problem with so many accidents that are occuring on M ways its tailgaiting ,these drivers must be clueless on what can happen or get hypnotised with the back bumper?
Time after time the road is closed or down to one lane as half a dozen cars have shunted ,its beyond me why they do it.

I spend a lot of time on the motorways too, generally the only people I see getting properly tailgated are the ones who won't get out of the way into a clear lane to the left.

Of course it depends what you call tailgating. People do tend to travel closer than they ought in general, but its only a few I think who get silly close.

You almost sound like you're trying to justify such tailgating behaviour. There are lots of scenarios where people can't regulate their speed correctly. Or, where they simply wake up when you're overtaking and then adjust their speed to where they want it. Also, I see a lot of tailgating occurring when people won't move over quickly enough - I actually think it is rude to cut in front of other people, so I do tend to wait longer before pulling in, especially if the speed differential isn't great. There is also the factor of waiting your turn...

The majority of people I see getting 'properly tailgated' are done so by extremely impatient drivers.

If you slam your brakes on, they usually get the message and stop tailgating!

Not recommended!

I personally think it's just that people aren't that smart. The same people who tailgate off the motorway are the same ones who do it on the motorway, it's just that you typically experience a higher percentage of drivers/cars per mile covered on a motorway so it becomes more noticeable. Those who tailgate off the motorway do so with a similar gap at 30mph as they do at 70+mph...which is where bigger problems occur.

Tailgating is not ok anywhere. The only time I can sympathise with someone who is tailgating is if the driver is breaking road rules such as lane disciple or is well below the speed limit. (20 in a 30, 30 in a 40, 40 or 50 in a 60 etc..)

What gets me annoyed is when I'm driving the speed limit on a single carriageway in a town at 30MPH and the person behind me is up my bumper just sitting there at 30 or 40. I'll admit I tend to drive at 35 in a 30 if there's no police or cameras and they're still there right in your bumper so the headlights are just about visible every now and then. No braking distance or safety zone at all. I find myself distracted trying to locate and judge the car behind me more than I am focused on the road in front of me.

I think education needs to happen to show people what happens when you tailgate and there is a crash, wether it's rear ending someone, side swiping someone due to pulling out to avoid the ca in front, there's always consequences to it if something does go wrong.

Get out of the overtaking lane then you fanny. I do a good lot of driving and I drive faster than 99% of all road users as I have to be places; the fking bane of a typical day on the road is VERY POOR land discipline and UNDER ADHERENCE to national speed limits.. Always get the bd 99 year old Dorris in her Jazz/Spark doing 19 in a fking 30, on the motorway and some thick tw@ travelling at 65 in the OVERTAKING lane. Get out if the way you fking morons.

ETA - I NEVER get tail gated, does that tell you something??

Some people have little games dont they like beating the satnavtime or beat your MPG etc my thing is seeing all the brakes going on if I am on the Motorway outside lane but all im using is my accelerator pedal. What about a lorry driving normally in the middle Motorway lane with left lane full and some plonker in a small car right up the lorrys rear concentrating like crazy ,madness.

Just accept it's likely you require confidence training to become a safe, confident, competent driver?

Like I say I do a lot of M/way miles and it is very rare I am tailgated, what's the difference?

Interpretation of being tailgated? wobble

The point is you do get tailgated. And you admitted you get tailgated 1% of the time you drive...to me that's quite significant.

Not a single one.

>Still not liking people?
I am a lone wolf, there are a few people I like but they are like me which is quite rare.
