PH used to be so civilised.
Take a trip into 'News, Politics & Economics' if you want to see how 'civilised' some parts of PH are. There are lots of folks in there who you really, really wouldn't want to ever meet.
Yes, and yet other parts such 'All creatures great and small' is the exact opposite, full of brotherly love and sympathy. It amazes me to see occasionally posts on there from familiar names on NP&E (who usually act like rabid hyenas ready to fight with their own shadows), posting fluffy little stories about their pets.

I can't claim to do the mileage I'm sure some of you do but every other weekend I do a 250 miles motorway round trip consisting of the M25 and M4.

I tend to set the cruise control at 70 and relax, I stay to the left and only venture over to the overtaking lanes to do just that. The first leg of the journey is from 05.30 to 08.00 so the M25 is clear and the M4 is much the same.

The way back is a different story though as the motorways become busier and then you see the driving standards take a dive. The M25 being the worst cuplrit, at 09.00ish on a Saturday cruise control is a no go, speeds just vary constantly and that's even trying to stay to the left.

One of the biggest problems I seem to see is that no one wants to move back into the left hand lanes, even when they have two empty lanes to their left, they just sit there.

You end up with the combination of people in the overtaking lanes wanting to do 80mph or more (which actually I don't take issue with) sitting behind drivers who don't want to do that speed but will not get out of the way. Combine the volume of traffic with the idiots who won't move and people all end up bunched up itching to build speed back up. Plus so many people have literally no idea what braking distances are and their importance.

There's no excuse for tailgating but I can see how the uneducated/dimwits may end up doing so without intending to.

It seems to me that the general public need a massive wake up on lane definition and positioning.

Anyone know a reason why they don't use the information signs on motorways to remind people to move to the left? When they're not displaying more urgent information that is.

I think an online petition is needed. Anyone more literate than me want to start one?

Saw more evidence of this driving style this morning on the M2 London bound. Five cars on the hard shoulder exhibiting front and rear end damage. Except for one with rear end only and one with front end only! Clearly an 'EEEEK Donk Donk Donk Donk Donk' event. (probably four more whiplash claims to insurance so up go the premiums again).

So by reading through this thread (quiet day at work) we can say that tailgating is caused by:-

1. Selfishness
2. Lack of awareness
3. Aggression
4. Poor lane discipline
5. Everyone driving slower than FappyFappy.

To that I would add the type of car you are driving. I get tailgated more in my Jag than in the family SUV for the same speed. So should we include a 'Race me' cause as well?

Is point 5 a genuine issue? I mean that as a genuine question.

I would have thought if someone chooses to sit at 60-65 but always stays to the left, that's not generally a big problem? Obviously there is a cut off point whereby people driving significantly under 70 make themselves a hazard.

It's a problem when they decide they'd rather be in the overtaking lanes though.
