Simple but hard. Budget of £6.4k (fixed). I had for a while fancied an MT07 but then every what bike thread says buy a Street Triple. So my preference (just) is for a Street Triple ABS but can't stretch to a new one. I have seen a couple at £6.4k 1 year old and very low miles (under 2k). Or I can get a band new 2016 MT07 ABS for less money around 5.8k ish.

What do you think?

Why isn't the MT09 on the list?

Get the Triumph. Good as the Yamaha is, paying the road tax for a 700cc class bike and getting 500cc performance just doesnt add up to me. Cracking bike for commuting though as it is very light and frugal (Yamaha).

Guessing over budget? What about the XSR700 retro version of the MT07. Had a look at the bike show in November and was rather taken by it smile

You could get a Speed Triple for that money. More bike for your money than both the Street and the Yamaha.

Hadn't thought of an MT09 or a Speed Tripple to be honest just wasn't on my radar.

So far I like the MT seating position, how lite it is and that it would be nice to have a new bike and it fits well within budget. I have just sold a couple of bikes and want to do this within what I got for them.

The Street just looks awesome, I would like a Triumph, plenty to spare power wise and I didn't get anywhere near pushing it.

Somebody mentioned the the MT was under powered is that the general view. I have been riding a Kawasaki ER6 N for the last 2 years so pretty much everything seems quicker than that even my 1979 Yamaha RD250E

Will have a look at MT09 and Speed and run the insurance costs. (Fuel costs not an issue as not a commuter )

Thanks all

Don't go for the MT07, you'll be looking to change within 12 months.

Okay couple more questions ABS yes or No? And What's the difference between an MT07 and MT07 Cage ?

I would take abs. The cage has more plastics stuck to it, so it's purely a cosmetic change. The mt07 sounds incredible with a titanium akrapovic.

The Cage is just an accessory variation kit, using the extra frame bars, hand guards, decals, rubber bits and red wheels to give a mild Stunt-bike style to the bike. Not really worth paying anything extra for unless you fall in love with the aesthetic.

I'd personally go for ABS though, useful tech and will make the bike easier to sell most likely.

Agree on the Akra, but remember you have to get a full system, no slipon as it's a one-piece system, and hence quite costly

I recently tested a Street Triple R, MT07, MT09 and Tiger 800 XRX. You really need to get test rides to see which one is for you.

Personally, I'm stepping off a sports bike because of neck and shoulder problems and the STR, while wonderful in so many ways was much too like an unfaired sports bike - complete with quite a lot of forward lean. The Tiger 800 XRX would be fantastic for covering huge distances but rather unwieldy for commuting and filtering (for me anyway). The MT07 was a peach in so many ways and so much fun with the almost silly feeling of its torque delivery and so flickable around town (even more than the STR in my hands). The MT09 still seemed to have a snatchy throttle in A and STD modes and while very capable was just far less fun than the MT07.

My Night Fluro MT07 arrives on 1st March smile

It doesn't, but I'm struggling to think of an argument in favour of the Street Triple when the Speed Triple is also on the table.

The speed Triple or Street Triple is what I would buy, here is the story of mine......................it's a bit off topic but anyway......................

Back in 2012 I sold my White 2008 Speed Triple for £5000 following a phone call from the owner of Wimmterbrack Kawasaki in the Netherlands, the bike had arrows, belly pan, screen, bar end mirrors, new tires and was genuinely immaculate with 6000 miles and all the original parts never used.

I had had the bike advertised for 2 months and nothing! I am N.Ireland and it's a strange place where people scramble to buy a £999 165,000 mile TDI Mondeo but not a good value bike.

Following a £5000 transfer into my account a van turned up and took the Triumph away, I then got a call from the boss to complement me on how clean the bike was, it then reappeared in the dealership with a price of 10995 Euro.

A week after that I got a call from another N.Ireland guy with a Speed Triple for sale to see if I had sold it as he could not sell his either.

The Street Triple is lighter, more nimble, doesn't have a boat anchor for an engine and there is little in it performance wise due to the power to weight ratio.
I'm guessing you've never had a shot of a Street, they're brilliant bikes, I had a test ride of a Speed and just couldn't get on with it at all, it didn't really offer anything over the Street.
Never had a shot of the Yamaha so can't offer any opinion.
