Hmmm, 0-60 times are never going to do a 2ton 4x4 any favours. In a similar way that a McLaren P1 doesn't do very well in terms of off-road approach angle or towing capacity.
But once a Shogun is moving, they do seem to pick up speed in a fairly meaningful way between 30 and 80mph.

We had a 12v 3.0 LWB Shogun.. 0-40 was swift, but that last 20mph to 60 took an age. I guess because it didn't enjoy revving beyond 4krpm and with a 4 speed auto it was geared quite long. But it was actually a really fun car to hussle at speed, the autobox was spot on. I always wondered what the evo would feel like with less weight and almost twice the power.

4x4s always seem faster in the flesh than their figures suggest.. Maybe because you know you are moving such gargantuan amounts of weight.

For a big car, it handled really well.

As I've mentioned before, my Mum had a "UK" one in about 2002 when she was 63!

I drove it a lot and I used to love upsetting Boxster drivers (on short, straight sections)

Where did 0-60 in 11 seconds come from? Pfffffffffft!

It has a 3.5 litre Mivec V6 engine it cannot be compared to other road going Pajero's.

Plenty of third-generation Shoguns had 3.5 v6s with the MIVEC VVT, although maybe not many in diesel-friendly European markets. Plenty - even here - of the second generation had the 3.0 (and other markets had the 3.5) v6, in several forms, albeit without the VVT.

These are available with low mileage for half of the asking price of this model here in Hong Kong. I almost bought one a few months ago.

csb bit here; i considered getting one a few years ago but the issue with these is that the Subaru Forester does it better (except maybe having the option of 2wd and maybe wading depths)

I love the way these look - it's like a proper Tonka truck. I think I'd love to drive one more than I'd want to own one, though.

I think I'd save myself £4k and go for a freshly imported Forester STi - more practical, more refined (it's all relative), manual box, six speed, almost twice as fast to 60...

I think that was a comment about the mk3 3.2td engine.

I remember taking a video of our lwb model and it hit 60 in around 14seconds. Partially up hill and carrying the approx weight of 1 passenger. And the 12v 3.0 V6 was 'middle of the range' bearing in mind the 24v 3.0 came out later and there was the range topping 3.5 V6 with a good 80bhp more than ours iirc. The diesels were slow af, but at least they did better than 12-18mpg biggrin

Drop some weight (for the swb), turn the power up to over 280bhp , and I would say the Pajero evo was more likely in the sub 8 second range. Which, back in the day before the Cayenne Turbo S/X5M, was super quick for a (proper) 4x4.

Doesn't seem to hamper Teslas much?

I am sure the 0-60 was sub 7 seconds because I used to leave most cars standing at the lights all of the time. I also met a chap many years after selling mine at Japfest, he had a rare manual model he had put an aftermarket air filter on which was a cone the size of my head. He obviously knew the car well because he had carefully fitted a cold air duct system to the filter. He had put the car on a Dyno Dynamics rolling road and had achieved 318 BHP according to what he told me the air filter was the only mod and the sound of the induction was lush. So much for the gentlemen's agreement of 280 BHP came to mind.
If by any chance you are on Pistonheads I'm the guy with the nicely modified black RX7 Bathurst X that you over to check out.
Fast forward many years and when I tried a Cayenne Turbo S it just brought back flashes of the experiences I had with the Evo.

Obviously you don't realise that electric motors deliver 100% torque from zero revs, which is why the Tesla is so quick.

Revs?

A standstill I guess is more accurate

There's a white one of these around the corner from my house and I lust after it whenever I drive past. The pictures don't do justice to how wide they look in the metal. Proper cool.

Owned my Pajero Evolution for 6 years. Absolutely love it. Its a daily driver and mpg is awful, but what the hell. Yes, it can be outperformed by a lot of more modern cars, but nothing sounds quite like it. I paid under 9K for it and theyre now going for up to 15K. Not much else in the car market goes up in price. Also its in the much rarer red.

Always had a bit of a soft spot for these. Absolutely bonkers, and more than a little of the Lamborghini LM002 about it.

I saw one in a car park once, maybe 10 years ago, whilst waiting for my step-son to finish at Scouts, so had a really good shufty at it until the owner came barelling out of a nearby building and demanded to know why I was casing her car. I had to explain that I was a car enthusiast and had never seen one up close before. At this point you'd expect a geeky car chat to ensue but instead she just grunted and walked off again. Very odd.
