My father had a Camry Sport in the same shape which had uprate suspension and a very tasteful bodykit.

Absolutely charming car. Certainly wouldn't go out of my way to buy one as they're so sluggish, but it was exceedingly comfortable and extremely well made.

In the '80's I grew up reading Superbike Magazine. The Suzuki GSX1100 drag bike racing editor was called Tony Middlehurst.

Now Tony Middlehurst is recommending a Toyota Camry on a performance car forum.

Shocking. frown

My mum and dad both each had their own 3.0 V6 Camry's back in the day. My mums was a horrible maroon colour with cream leather seats and loads of gadgets. Whilst my dad had a really nice, sportier, almost liquid/pearl silver one with a factory bodykit + spoiler (it also said 'sport' on the wheels too which when you're a kid was uber cool).

I remember they had loads of gadgets, such as electric seats, and a big engine (or what seemed like it to me at the time). So for me I'll always have a soft spot for Camrys as I've got many fond childhood memories with involving them.

If Alan Partridge hadn't been so successful he'd have driven one of these.
Actually, the Camry was £26,000 against the Lexus IS200 starting at a poverty £18,000, with the top model sport only £20,900!

My old man had one new as a company car many years ago. Dark metallic blue with brown leather. Every box ticked on the options list, and a dirty great big motorola carphone bolted into the dash. It was a nice place to be, and from the passenger seat seemed like a reasonably fun drive too. Until he chopped it for a Lexus GS400, which was at the time bonkers fast for a big saloon, and made the Camry look pedestrian.

Come on.... really? 3.0 v6 doesn't even manage 200bhp. ugh

edit: and a quick google of the dealer selling it suggests some 'interesting' reviews.

Yeah..... stale piss taste for beer money perhaps is a more accurate description.

This is the kind of shed you only buy if you desperately need cheap transport NOW and you happen to live next to the old duffer that is giving up driving and willing to let it go for £500.

Worthy but hard to get excited about, surely an Anvensis would deliver the same expected reliability with lower running costs...

Why would they need to get more power out of the V6? It's going to have plenty of power to cruise comfortably and leaves it pretty unstressed. Seems a pretty sensible figure for the type of car.

And the bank job comments, awful choice! All it'd take is one person who knew what it was and the police would be round within minutes. Can we speak to you about a bank robbery sir? They drove off in a Camry and you're the only person with one in 100 miles...

When shopping for a sub £1k auto to see me through broken wrist recovery a LS400 and a Legend were top of the list after viewing way too many rusty Mercs. This would have been in that shortlist too.

You have to remember this is ad is from Rotherham, if you say it in a charming northern accent it almost makes sense.

Peugeot 406 3.0 V6 made "only" 194bhp

BMW 328i - ( of course 2.8) made 190bhp

Range Rover 4.0 V8- 182bhp

For a rather obscure reason I had to test one of these against the competition of the time. Amongst other similar vehicles it stood as as excellent value.

Like

I drove the previous generation V6 Camry and liked it, the engine and transmission was very smooth and had plenty of low end grunt, which gave it more than adequate performance for public roads. I like the idea of having a relatively powerful car with enough specification and Japanese reliability rather than one with electronic testicle warmers, heated indicator stalks, infra red damped glove box openers, rimz and flaky Germany "reliability".

This along with EML/traction light on....

I'd avoid this particular example!

I think my next car will be a big Lexus, Toyota import or similar smile

For the Americans that generally buy this kind of fare they dont think about the 3 litre V6, it isnt a big engine, just what a car this size needs to move it, plus a smidge more, just in case they need it, they have no expectation o performance just that it does its job adequately, quietly and petrol price isnt even a slight concern for most.

Would be a good daily for the commute if you dont expect huge performance and excitement, you wont notice it being utterly dependable and generally being a good car, then you will get rid and buy something thats more exciting but a pain in the arse most of the time and miss it.

Good shed

The 3 litre Pug was revamped with 210 bhp.

A readers' cars thread on an Alfa 3 litre V6 mooted the E39 528i seemed to be putting out more than the quoted power.

The 3 litre Busso was 220bhp, possibly 227bhp with the earlier simpler ECU as found in the Phase 1 916 GTV V6.

The then (early noughties) new 30V 3 litre V6 in the B6 A4 made 220bhp.

Are these 3 litre Camry 188bhp?

Completely boring unless entered in the Toyota Sprint Series where it could 3 point turn some of the tighter corners on 3 wheels.

I like my barges to be pushed rather than pulled.

For that reason I'd find another grand and buy an e39 BMW 528i.
