RE: Shed of the Week: Toyota Camry 3.0 V6
Discussion
190 ish bhp is what it puts out, yes, there are more powerful V6 3 litres but it isnt about ultimate performance, its about power delivery, being smooth and generally not having to think about the engine at all. means to an end, its like trying to find excitement from your washing machine*
- Though I did catch an ex girlfriends mum leaning on the corner of one a bit too enthusiastically once....
I defended the Blazer last week but can't really defend this one. Just dull and soulless. Reliable possibly but I would rather have something interesting and less reliable than dull. A Lexus IS200 or LS400 would have some redeeming qualities but not this one. A poor SOTW in my humble opinion.

Another trivia: The estate version had dual wipers for the rear screen
Haha! I have an estate v6 automatic camry Ugly as hell....It has a many upsides but good mpg is not one! With 190 old warhorses it goes well, is much bigger than volvo/500 series and is a damn reliable car. Mine has done only circa 280 thousand miles so it is fairly low mileage for Camry. I kinda like it alot. Best winter car what i ever had, very good to drive in bad conditions. Mine is -92 so it Is fairly old lady.
I have to say again, it is ugly as hell. And i really mean that.

I used to love my old Avensis
Really? Which version out of curiosity? My girlfriend's X-reg Avensis was perhaps the most tedious car I've ever driven. I suppose you could call it wafty, but it was just so dull, had fairly crap steering and the turning circle of an oil tanker. In the USA during the late 80s, a Camry was relatively expensive and an alternative to some of the yuppie cars that were showing up on the road. They were considered cool. Most of them now are rental fleet variety and a mid priced family size sedan. People without a lot of money buy them because they last forever and are reliable. They are also boring and have become a synonym for cheap. I really hate them, but if you need an inexpensive reliable commuter car that will last a year or two, this is a good buy.

The 3 litre Pug was revamped with 210 bhp.
PSA group sent the ES9J4 3.0 V6 engine to Porsche to get them to tune it up. They produced a new head with variable valve timing, and uprated the internals. But then PSA group took the newly updated engine (now named ES9J4S) and stuck on an extra pair of catalytic converters (it had a set of cats and a set of lambda-monitored pre-cats), even though without the pre-cats, the engine still passed the emissions controls of the day. That engine with the new pre-cats produces the quoted 210 HP.
However, if you remove the unmonitored set of rear cats, then you get a fair bit more power out of the uprated engine, while still meeting emissions regulations. Technically this is in breach of VOSA regulations, but most people who've done this get away with simply hollowing out the rear cat cans and putting the empty cans back on. The ECU doesn't notice, so no EML.
The kind of car that sold on reliability and the number of gadgets on the dashboard. Pretty much the kind of vehicle that will be bought by the kind of people who hope for the self driven car to become a reality, will only pay £2 to some migrants to clean their car when a numberplate isn't visible, get the cheapest partworns fitted and will only get it serviced when/if it goes wrong. Light on the dashboard......ambience isn't it ?
It couldn't be any less PH if it tried, however it isn't a BMW/Audi so Shed has to be commended for trying to be different !

Tbh I've drive a few VW/Audi variants that could be describe as the later but not the former of my comment above.

I think my next car will be a big Lexus, Toyota import or similar
I've had a similar dream for many years now. My mind says facelift LS430 but my heart says imported Toyota Celsior 4.0 in black with black leather and lots of unvarnished wood. I wouldn't even mind it having fabric seats. I've recently reignited my childhood obsession with all things Japanese, and on occasion I think I'm Beat Takeshi in a black suit.

My parents had one of these and the model before, I used to drive it a lot when I was 18 in 1993, if was a fast car in the early 90's, back then it seemed a huge engine when the majority of cars were more like 1.4 - 1.8, the Golf GTI of the time was what 118bhp?
The Camrys were heavy old Hectors though, so in reality were no faster than a Golf Gti - they just about cracked 10 seconds for the 60 sprint with the manual boxGassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
