Did you pick this example knowing that's very nearly what happened, or is that just a smashing coincidence?A common theme nowadays is that modern cars are hampered - design-wise - by safety regulations. I think the new Alpine concept is a beautifully executed homage to the original, that seems to fulfil most of the basic regulation requirements (like pedestrian safety etc), or at least has the body volume to allow the clever crash structures underneath it. The key with "heritage styling" is not to just make a car and then bung a "retro face" on it - that Bentley above is a good example - but to go the whole hog.
There's a difference between making reference to an older car - as with the SLR mentioned above - and just making a modern version of the old car.
The Ford GT example given above is another good case.
The thing about these 'retro' designs is that they are parodies. They don't look like the old cars - they look like the marketing department has decided on design.
The new Mini, Beetle, 500 look terrible - jelly mould design.
That Stratos is rotten, Eric Clapton's Ferrari is a travesty (with that amount of money, just buy the original car and make it work perfectly - and have the modern one) and if there is a god, the new Miura will never happen (there isn't and it will).
When Lambo came to replace the Miura, they came up with the Countach - that's what retro design stops from happening.
I'd say the 911 is a different case because it's a design that has evolved over the years. However, Porsche's marketing strategy of trying to make all of their cars look like 911s hinders those cars' design - and you end up with the Panamera.

I am not a fan of the current Mini, Beetle or Fiat 500. However I could look at the Stratos and the Miura all day because both were wonderful & exotic in the originals wheras the Mini, Beetle & 500 weren't.
I could also happily gaze at the Lancia Fulvia shown off a while back & this new Alpine.

It's like music. All the the good songs have been written and played by now. Everything new is derivative or crap. Or both. Same goes for car design. On another point, old Porsches are being sacrificed to make them look older still not newer.
Like music you get good covers of songs and bad ones that spoil the original, cars are the same.
