The answers already been given

TVR Cerbera for 10K+
TVR Chimerea for under 10K

Huge grin factor, enough performance for most, great club/owners and always 'interesting' (be that driving, or fixing) biggrin

Without sounding too gushing, the 916 series Alfa GTV and Spiders from 1995-2006 pull off the 'mini Ferrari' thing very, very well.

A well sorted GTV V6 can be had for 5k, an equivalent Spider perhaps a few bob more.

Even my tuned up 4-pot TS seems exotic compared to most of the dullards on the road.

For 5k its a true slice of Italy, and an occasion to drive every time.

ps. Prices are now on the up too, after years of being almost in shed territory. Buy them whilst you can!
Can't help but agree, they were so cheap for so long I think decent V6s have had their time at the bottom of the barrel. This is in no way related to me probably having to sell mine soon (we're up to 5 cars between 2 people and it's frankly ridiculous)

Porsche 924/944, a better car (if not image) than any Escort ever was, same era as a Mk2 RS2000 but more powerful, handles better and much better built, a grand still gets a working example, 4 gets the pick of most. Same goes for non turbo 944's, dont want to pay 20 grand plus for that 968 Club Sport, a well sorted 944 S2 for about 5 grand ?
A grand won't get you a half decent 924 with MOT and tax. A 'nice' 924 N/A would be £3-4k and rising all the time. I'd also suggest that you're looking at somewhere £8-10k for a 944S2 that doesn't need money throwing at it. You do get the odd car that's at a sensible price though, but they're getting few and far between and snapped up quickly. My friend has just paid over £1000 for a 924 that's been in storage for several years that needs a fair bit of work doing to it.

968 Club Sport models are hovering around the £30k mark now, even looking at a leftie from Europe would be late £20k's for a nice one sadly.

I still limp because of that fking car, combined with a tit of a salesman on their stand at a London Motor show. The whole hall seemed to come to a standstill when he slammed the driver's door shut with my knee fulcrumed between it and the steering wheel thus eliciting the loudest cry of '' heard in London since that bloke set fire to the bakery. A worse motoring injury than burning my ballbag on a mini's radiator while peeing into it to get enough coolant to be able to drive home.

Even today, just hearing 'cappuccino' instills me with an overwhelming desire to punch a young salesman in the face. Although, on reflection that could just be a Starbucks thing.

If you're after a Fast Ford, it's not true there's nothing about under 10k -you just have to look about

Here's a 5-seater with a nice burbly V6, very practical load carrier, reasonably fast ( think GT86 performance ) with a year's MOT on that sold for £3029

If the alfa 4c depreciates like other alfa's they will be affordable soon and much more interesting than a 911.
Suspect they'll depreciate more in line with the SZ/RZ and 8C than the MiTo.

I still think a Cerbera is a staggering amount of raw performance and desirability for the money.

There's a nice well sorted early one in the classifieds for £13,500, for a car that could take on most 90s and 00s supercars and soundly hand them their arse whilst never failing to put a grin on its owner's face when driving.
This is a great car, but maintenance costs tore my friend a new exit-hole! ...and he wasn't exactly poor.

All the cars I'd suggest have already been covered:
For fun/track use in increasing cost Renault Sport Clio 172/182, MR2 Roadster, mk3+ MX-5 (with or without BBR kit), Elise/VX220 and Boxster.
For posing/investment mk1 Audi TT or an R129 SL.

Are they really what constitutes "interesting" cars? confused
Yes.

No-one saying they are THE most interesting cars you can buy for the money, but they are, nevertheless in the scheme of things, interesting cars against the sea of white goods banality that one normally sees on the roads.

Hopefully this is as much of a reply as you'll get and no-one rises to the argument you're obviously looking for.
Each to their own. However if someone asked me to provide some pictures of whitegoods cars, an ST or VXR would be the type of thing I'd expect, if I'm being honest.

I'm not detracting from those cars abilities.. or that they may be good cars. But I'm not what really constitutes as 'interesting' about them.

That said, I see no reason people can't be interested in them. But that's not really the same thing.

I'm slightly biased but Mercedes did some beautiful V8s and 12s in n/a and supercharged form (in a few model shapes) that we probably won't see the like of again.

Dare I say RX7? Prices seem to be slowly on the up but a good one can be had for around £6-7k. Looks good, rather rare and exotic engine with a factory 270bhp not slow either.
Another vote for a Mazda RX-7 FD although I disagree that a good one can be found that cheap. The best examples are north of £15k now but really good examples can be had somewhere around the £10-12k mark.

Option 2 would be a R33 Skyline as they can be had for £10-15k in good shape.

Option 3 would be a Mitsubishi Evo 9. UK cars go for close to £20k but Japanese imports which are almost guaranteed to be in better shape due to less rust can be had for less than £15k.

Option 4 would be a 2006-2010 Honda Civic FD2 Type R. 230bhp from the K20 motor and is arguably the best front wheel drive car ever produced in terms of chassis performance and driver dynamics. Yes, better than Renault Meganes. Basically just as quick as a NSX around Tsukuba circuit as well. These in excellent shape can be had between £12-17k.

I bought an almost immaculate 2.0TS coupe in 2011 with 4 new tyres and a full tank of petrol for £600. Not looked recently but im guessing that boat has sailed.

The RX7, FD2 & R33 would be more or less depreciation proof as well.

TVR Cerbera for 10K + is a tad vague....

Taking out the cars from a well known breaker and 15k+ is possibly more realistic.

Lots of v good Chimaera's out there for 10k+ below that figure...not so sure.
