Depends on which country you live in.

The UK has been sanitized to death, but there are plenty of markets out there with good choices

Hmm, personally I'm of the opinion that the UK has about the most interesting selection of cars available of any country. I suppose it depends on what you enjoy but very few other countries have the wealth of small-volume manufacturers that we do.

We do punch above our weight, but most of the small build manufacturers are out of the every man's budget.

One thing the UK does have in it's favor are very lenient laws on home build type vehicles and imported cars.

There's still plenty around.

Escorts too much - try a Chevette
Capri too much - try a Manta

Most Japanese stuff is still ridiculously cheap although they've risen a bit an R32 GTR or FD RX7 for less than £10k is far better IMO than a 911.

MX5s are cheap from Mk1 to Mk3 - better still there are loads of tuning options too.

MR2s - again all are interesting cars.

E30 BMW, 200SX...

4th gen Trans Am/ Camaro Z28 or SS.
These cars had the LS1 engine from 1998 and, though they claimed 305hp, they had nearer 350hp when Mustangs were punting a GT with 215 weedy horses (pre-allegedly 305hp Cobra).
If you can find one, they are £6 to £10k and, as with any American car, very modifiable at affordable costs and cheap to run, overall and 13 second quarters out of the box.
T-tops are the icing on the cake if you can find one.
