I like quite a tight, controlled, cultured and musical note; not a great fan of American style v8 woofle, including moderns manufactured with a similar sort of note I.e. AMG, jag F type V8. Also prefer induction to exhaust noise.
Totally agree with this. I find a real artificial quality to most modern V6 engines in particular, none seem to be able to match the sound of even the humble Ford Duratec V6. Induction and engine noise I enjoy, exhaust noise a lot less so.

For me its pops and bangs on overrun.
Nothing like that sounds coming into a bend!
yes

One of the main reasons why I just can't consider not having a straight6 TVR is the noise.

When it's too... hmm... modern, it's loses its edge.

This isn't bad! https://youtu.be/3ZiLTMCY4_Q

Here's my old TVR Chimaera, certainly no stranger to a pop and bang off-throttle:

I love the noise of a BMW straight-6 from the 80s, before silencers were so necessary.

And I have a bit of a thing for the very mechanical noise on start up as well, a kind of warning to anyone else nearby that something is happening, a kind of "wait for it..."

It then needs to sound as if I am going off to invade a country.

No kids, and the R129 500SL.
This.

(But I may be biased).

Also good are tuned rotaries (barp barp barp barup barp barp is just wonderful when they idle as are the flames on over run)
Straight sixs usually sound good (but V6s generally don't) and V12s.

Also a fan of a good turbo three with its mini Porsche like sound (bizarrely I'm not a fan of Porsches as they sound a bit too mechanical....).

In cars, I love the feral growl of the Dodge Viper's V10. It shows Audi how a V10 should sound!

However, there is no automotive sound better than the 955i triple engine in Triumph bikes with a high level carbon can. The perfect balance of turbulent, offbeat exhaust and wild intake noise. It is amazing.

love the sound of my stock MK5 R32. It sounds teriffic in any part of the rev range but can also be perfectly civialised and next to silent if cruising at 70.

Best car ive driven noise was was hands down my cousins W204 C63. It just sounds utterly brilliant..which is one of the reasons why my R32 is for sale, as i have had my heart set on a C63 ever since i drove his last year. B7 Rs4's still sound fantastic, very bassy and rumbley..they remind me of a nascar.

Newer V8s just dont do it for me with thier over programmed, artificial crackles and bangs. RR Sport SVR, F Type, even my bosses M5 - dont get me wrong they sound fantastic but their trying far far too hard when theres just no need.

Whatever I am looking for I won't find it in 99% of road cars. The cultured howl of an old 911 is easy on the ear and just about every TVR sounds lovely (from old style Volvo Straight Six(eta - I was having a Marcos moment - I mean Triumph of course) via Rovers to in house engines) but God save me from the utterly daft noise made by every Ferrari V8 - nasty screaming whine. AMGs sound fine but aren't they all a bit look, look at me ! ? Lamborghinis- daft but loveable , whether 8 . 10 or 12.

Proper Noise belongs on race tracks and drag strips - no road car sounds remotely impressive next to a small block Chevy in race trim and a sports racing Ferrari - 312P, 512M - sounds like a choir of angels! And that's before we even get on to F1 engines .....or the sound of a Gp B Quattro in a forest at night

I like an engine that screams* - I know some don't but horses for courses as far as I'm concerned.

  • Basically high revving race-type engines - Ferraris, BDAs, 6R4s & the like.

I am partial to the growl of a nice AMG Merc V8. I quite like the deeper bass tones.

Quite surprising as I have the polar opposite in an E60 M5. Don't get me wrong, I like the sound but it's too high pitched to be my favourite. It kinda goes through me like a shrill scream from a little girl. Makes my vision go blurry in tunnels it's that loud but it's too piercing.

The ultimate for me would be from a decent turbocharged car. The suction noise from the intake, the whistle from the turbo and then the compressor surge when you back off. It's just so intoxicating.

The ultimate for me is a big V8 with a big lumpy cam with lots of overlap. So a terrible filthy idle that barely runs, and then a deep monstrous roar through the rev range.

I like anything with an interesting motor though, I enjoyed the sound of the 3 pot in a C1 I borrowed, I love the sound of the old Subaru flat four before they 'fixed' it, 5 pots in the Focus and Volvos, straight 6 in a Supra, wobbly 6 in a Golf, the glorious Busso V6, love V8s although not a huge fan of the flat plane sound (except the 355), I do like a V10 wail and old or new a V12 always sounds special.

I think I just like engines cloud9

Except inline 4s hehe

An odd one, but I love the 'wobble' in revs of a manual gear change as the clutch is re-engaged and the revs aren't quite matched perfectly. It's why I loathe the sound of autos and DSG boxes, I hate the instant changes as they take away any illusion that the engine is 'alive', they sound robotic and soulless.

I like all sorts.

I like an agricultural lumpy idle. I like changes in tone through the RPM range. I like I5s, I6s, V6s, O6s, V8s (both cross and flat plane), V10s, V12s, O12, V16, H24.

So long as it has character, I'll probably like it. Engines that sound synthesised or only change in pitch through the rev range don't interest me. I like harmonics and flaws and crackles and pops and roars and burbles and whines.

Im a huge fan of a 5 pot turbo noise with a bit of turbo chatter such as an audi 5 pot or volvo. with the right induction and a sensible exhaust you cant go wrong. (in my opinion obviously)

RB26's sound immense as well as a 2JZ.

and also older american muscle V8s for me.

oh and a VR6.

My favourite noise is the rumble of an American V8 or a TVR Rover V8 or similar, I also liked the angry noise the AJPV8 made at high revs in my Cerbera and the fact it was vocal even at idle with its sports exhaust.

Apart from TVR's straight six I am not that keen on the noise a straight six makes...for example I think the S54 engine in the M3/Z4M makes a horrible tinny and wasp like noise with very little bass or depth to its sound.

I also prefer a V6 to a straight six for noise.
