A Wartburg car transporter,to carry an older rally model.
Hope the engine has been warmed over for more power.
I think from the front panel it's probably a water-cooled Golf-powered one, so <shrug> anything up to a VR6...?

The Osties made 6 wheeled Barkas transporters with the standard 1 litre stinkpot, so the Wartburg possibly does too.phil y said:

Seems a bit daft given VW made Caddies for those with a burning need to have a loadbed.
The caddy of this era was based on a polo not a golf. It probably was a bit daft to build and that is probably why I like it.

Other than the tray being changed that left the factory like that - VZ Commodore 1 tonne ute. Also available in Ute (seen here with added 5 poster bulbar)
And Crewman (basically a 4 door cab chassis)
All available with 5.7 and latterly 6.0 V8s
These 2 however have been converted:

No need for apparently, it is very much the real deal.
Found some more pics: http://www.bmwfaq.com/threads/bmw-m5-e39-ute-coupe...Definitely one of the cooler conversions, and there's plenty of cheap E39's out there. I fancy a 530d auto pickup I reckon the load bay length will be close to 2 metres, handy.
