I think a lot of these look really good. I've done a really dodgy ms paint edit below.

How much work/what kind of bracing would be in doing this properly and would it have to be q plated?

Ha, that's basically a modern Ford P100! I saw a Mondeo conversion from Ireland that used the estate tailgate behind the front seats.
For Factory finish, your nearest options are the Ford Falcon Ute from Australia, or the Fiesta-based Courier pickup from South Africa.

ETA Mmmm, "pursuit ute"

Has anyone had problems registering a conversion with DVLA. I have recently built a Merc E Class Pick Up and DVLA have now told me that the original identity is null and void and the car will need an SVA and be put on a Q plate. This was after them selling me a cherished number and taxing it!

The DVLA are absolutely correct, and your vehicle requires a BIVA test and subsequent Q-plate.

ANY modification which cuts into the monocoque renders the vehicle ID unregistered under the Radically Altered Vehicle rules, and you now require Type Approval for new Registration, under the BIVA test.

Spotted this E30 conversion on Facebook marketplace, looks pretty good apart from the engine bay. Shame they didn’t do a full respray

Won't be much of an investment when the DVLA rescind the V5C.

I stumbled over this thread after being a long time forum lurker. I have recently ordered one of the Smyth Jetta conversions kits from the USA to convert a car in the UK.

There is a lot of a fuss being made over the IVA issue for these, to be honest I cannot see how if it is done well it would fail at IVA. I have got kit cars through in the past and the actual "structural" part of the test is not that big......

Won’t you just end up with something close to a mk1 Caddy?

Kind of, the appeal for me is that I can go newer though. So I am using a MK5 Jetta Donor with the 2.0tfsi engine in it.

The idea for me was to have a bit a of rolling project that can be used as a daily driver once its registered. Also it will be handy for transporting bikes in!

No-one is making a big deal of them getting through an IVA. It's the fact that the builders don't submit them and illegally run them on the original VRM without notifying the DVLA of the body style change that is the issue.

It amazes me that people with real talent spend time and significant money building something then flout the rules for the sake of a £600 test.

I'm a huge fan of car/pickup jobs, but the finish on that Tesla is appalling - look at the chrome line on the door for one.

I'll nope out of that one...

Fully agree but you have to see the video on how it came to be. Very amusing.

That could have looked very good, but it was done in an attempt to get more subscribers not make a nice motor
