After 22,000 miles or so in the last 7 months I need to retire the A6 from the fleet and replace it with a large estate. The high miles are likely to continue for a while, so long distance comfort is high on the requirements list. I don't really have a clue what to go for, nothing is really jumping out at me.

I quite fancy a full fat Range Rover but bork potential and overall running costs put me off (plus they aren't quite in budget for this thread yet). Suggestions welcome.
Something like this perhaps ?

£4,999 - Jaguar XJ 2.7 TDVi Sovereign

ETA - Ah forgot the estate bit. Still thread useful though smile

£3,995 - Mercedes-Benz E-Class E320 CDI AVANTGARDE

I think someone up above doesn't want me to attend this week's meeting. First the s124 is significantly delayed, then today the clutch of my substitute car (993) has expired.

Still coming though, and in a barge, but its an e250d hire car frown

Do they accrue no claims discount though? I didn't think classic policies did?
At £129 a year, who cares?!

You do need to have another car on an ordinary policy, though, which may be an oblique way of answering the question and satisfying the concern about losing NCD.
No they don't accrue NCD. All my cars are on one multi vehicle policy. It is technically a classic policy, but with moderns added as well. As long as there are no more moderns than classics they are happy.
if u dont mind me asking who is that with?

Ach Harry, you tease. I was looking forward to a run down from Cairnryan in a 993. Sorry to hear about your clutch, you must be pi$$ed off that neither the porker or 124 can make it.

Looking forward to it anyway, see you bright & early on Sunday.

I won't be able to attend on Sunday, so best wishes for a good day to all who make it. Mrs Stegel politely declined the offer of an overnight stay in the lakes, while pointing at a number of things considered (in all fairness correctly) higher priority, but hopefully I'll make the next one.

Comfortable anonymity. Like it!
I get where you're coming from but they are slow and it is a Skoda and someone has removed the anonymity by "modding" it to say "UPER" on the back, unless that's some kind of code for doggers.
I doubt its that slow. Isn't this essentially the same car as the VW Passat 4 motion, which was quoted as doing 0-60 in 7.7.? Skodas of that vintage were laughably pessimistic in quoting 0-60 figures. E.g, the original Fabia VRS. Skoda quoted 9.6, whereas Autocar managed 8.2.

Anyway, I like the idea of that Skoda, a lot.....!
A left field but wise choice, barring an issue with the front suspension, which had adjustment bolts rusting solid IIRC, that looks a great buy, comfortable, disposable driving.

Is it adjustment bolts?
Common issue on all VAG cars of that period is the long bolt that goes through the two top suspension arms and the upright bent. Used to see a few broken uprights where the lug the bolt passed through was broken.

CL600 now on auction with a reserve of £4k. Claimed to have had some recent work but not all it needs by the sound of it... wonder why it hasn't been MOT'd?

E39 fans may be interested in this article;

I agree with a lot of what is said, i've had quite a few E39's over the years, all very good cars. I've never had a W124 but I wonder if the E39 is the 'new' W124?

Can't MOT it with non working windscreen wipers (claimed to be only the stalk)

We have discussed this car before when it was simply advertised as "needing work" without any detail. It reads like an aborted "freshen up and sell" effort that has stumbled across some more serious faults - if they have diagnosed faults with the wiper stalk and the ABS why not simply rectify and MOT it? Could be simple, could be a money pit - they clearly want to quit now and gamble no more!

No pictures yet, but this sounds like a top barge. I've always thought this garage is probably OK, too.

Don;t worry about it. I will be bringing a mundane four-cylinder small-capacity turbo which according to the finest minds of PH makes a noise like a badly functioning vacuum cleaner and represents a total betrayal of everything its manufacturer stands for.
