The Jaguar Sovereign is a thing of beauty, and one would never tire of just looking at it.

The Lexus is not a thing of beauty, but you just know it will outlast the cockroaches. I am determined to have one. I suspect it's the equivalent of an 80s Mercedes in terms of quality.

What a pity it's the equivalent of a 90s Hyundai for visual appeal.
Agreed on all counts. A pal of mine has an early Lexus. White paint, grey leather, gold badges. 100k+ miles. It is unworn inside. The king of plastic. I even think they're quite attractive. But nobody likes a smart arse who is good at everything.

The Jag/Daimler series 3 V12. I really could do with one. They are exceptionally handsome and apparently really pretty capable on a long journey.

For obvious reasons, I've been lost in the Saab classifieds, but the Jag (and the Lexus for that matter) just strengthens my view that cars aren't what they used to be. They're all the same. And they're all tediously competent. But none of them would I want to drive to the south of France in.

That's why you have both biggrin Jag for visiting local pubs with thatched roofs, Lexus for l-o-n-g schleps in silence where nobody who knows you will see you driving it.

The doom blue one bought last week (£480) needs nothing and drives nicer than the admittedly better looking DHP car, so it's staying and the silver car is off to market. Giving the blue one a thorough clean and machine polish at the moment and its coming up like a new pin.

Few of us here will disagree with that. But we're the odd-balls. Amen.

Nice selection.
What's DHP?

A relative of mine in Solihull has an LS400, exactly like the green one. Had it from new, done about 150K now, never had a single fault. I want one.

Blue one looks pretty classy to me. Not dull at all. Thinking man's barge and all that.

"Dynamic Handling Pack" or Lexus speak for "Wallows a Tad Less".

In reality, it added 17" rimz, lowered front stance and uprated ARB. Eliminates the gangly, high fronted positive camber stance of all old Lexi and the wheels fill the arches like they should. They sit much nicer on the road- I'd almost call it handsome.

Is there another loser conference happening? Might attend if so- happy to toss the keys over to anybody who's ever considered one.

Daimlers - worth the excess over a Jaguar?

Or are we getting into classic territory?

As a first time barger I'm not sure what I'm doing hehe
Is there much of a premium for a Daimler with similar spec/engine as the Jag? I'm told that the leather is of a better quality but not recently seen another X300 to compare to, and the rear tables are a nice novelty I guess, but can't imagine you are looking at anything more than a couple of hundred quid in 'value' of what might be present in them.

The DHP ones do look a mile better. Still some frustratingly awkward looking details though.

Top barging!

Sunday 18 Sep, Gaydon.

0a has put a clever sign-up thing up somewhere which I'm sure someone can re-post.

Would be good to see a Lexus - don't think we've had one before, which feels wrong for barge fans.

Have you had the silver one long? Two LS 400's is quite a few cc's on the fleet.

I want an LS400 and it would have to be DHP car. I would also prefer black leather but that seems to be much rarer than the grey. There is a car local to me on an R Plate which is a black on black DHP car with ever so slightly tinted windows. I think it looks the business.

This looks like an okay C280 for under thread budget: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

I like that, good find. The C280s seem to be much rarer these days. Good cars, fundamentally. I wonder how much rust it has?

Yes, a couple of years. Although to be fair I've hardly used it for a year or so. An issue with the dealer fit alarm/immobiliser killed the car stone dead, right at the point of me starting a full-on house renovation, so it got pushed into the garage and fixed whenever I had the energy. Subsequent purchase of the Jag didn't help move matters on.

Eventually resolved the problem by unpicking the loom, removing all the gubbins and re soldering it all up, and all was well again. But then the alternator failed when the car moved house with us, so bought the blue one as a parts car for the alternator and any bits I could strip off to keep as spares. To my surprise, the blue one is in better shape and with 10 months MOT, so have decided to keep it and punt the DHP on as SOR.

A very generous offer, I'd take that up without hesitation (whilst trying very hard to keep my wallet shut). I would love to try an LS400. The prices they go for make it very hard not to just go and buy one, but I've nowhere to put one.

What are the auto gearboxes like on this age diesel Volvo? and what problems do these suffer from, finding it hard to find a nice T5 petrol.

Found one I thought I'd be getting but it's not changing gear properly and even if it learns how to change smoothly again i'm concerned about it needing a rebuild sooner rather than later, so maybe a diesel is the answer?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-V70-D5-AWD-185-BHP...

Something like this for under £2k perhaps, no mention of cambelt though.
They are a known weak point, but if it's in need of help it'll present on a decent test drive. If you find a good one change the oil and it should be fine, it's a simple issue of being specced as "Sealed for life" rather than with service interval.
The petrol one i was looking at is having some problems, but i wasn't sure if they were meant to be better after '02.

Does the diesel engine have any particular problems in either 165bhp or 183bhp variants?

Here is the signup page: http://doodle.com/poll/tt3kd5ky44zdgwgr

I would love to see an LS at the barge meet - I have never been in one before. The only Lexus I have been in is the electric 4x4 thing which seemed pretty comfortable.

What do people think of this Volvo.

Its a V70 p1, 97,000 miles with a good sounding history.
