Barge to me also includes the way the car drives so in a way a Diesel is (can be) very much classed as a barge.

Examples:

Not barges

BMW M5
Audi S8
Mercedes E55/63
Volvo T5

Barges

Audi A8 4.2 Diesel
BMW 7 series diesel
Toerag 5.0 V10

And I would include an old Skoda Superb 2.5 (petrol or diesel) as a barge.

I just think that diesel suits a very relaxed driving style and that is barging.

Points based entry system. Points awarded for velour, picnic tables and obscene maintenance costs, deducted for attempts at sportiness or fuel economy. M badges = instant deportation.

THE RULES OF BARGE
Rule 1) There are no rules of barge.

Rule 2) See Rule 1)

Personally, I consider the Lexus LS400 as THE barge. Barge Central. Barge Daddy. The Barge to end all Barges. Haute Barge. Bargeius Maxximus. You get the drift.

But I can still apply barge-ness to 3 Series coupe in non-M guise at one end, and a Maybach at the other, with some dreadful 1970's Zodiacs and VX/490's shoe-horned in as light relief (they were very barge-like in their road manners).

In the spirit of our egalitarian times, all can be BARGES (if they have the requisite je-ne-sais-quoi).

I'd probably only want a few hundred more for my 65k mile 2000 XJR

I agree with the sentiment, obviously don't agree that The Barge is a Japanese saloon, not while the 560 SEL or later S600 W140s are still knocking about

I would include the category of ´mini-barge´.

I´m always interested by, for example, the BMW E90 automatics that get posted on here from time to time.

Large-capacity 6-cylinder engine, autobox, leather etc. Lovely things that I enjoy coveting. Think a 330i from, say, 2007.
Having had E90s while I think they are decent cars they are all about "sports saloon", and I find them to have practically no barge qualities at all. Lots of road noise, generally unimpressive ride quality unless you go down to 16" wheels and lose the runflats and have SE suspension. They are more like rear drive Golf GTIs than anything else.

I almost agree with this. During the time I had my EDC-equipped E39 528iASE, I tried a number of 330i/d's from E46 all the way through to F10. They were all "sporty", with lots of road noise and excellent handling, with a ride to match. Almost agree, because they were all sporty/fake-M versions. If a small-wheeled SE/Luxury/Modern drove the same way then I would fully agree, but I haven't tried one yet to confirm.

I really miss that E39. The Laguna dCi that followed is very cheap to plough motorways with, but as a way to travel it is not a patch on that Beemer, particularly when approaching 3 figures (on the continent). I need another barge in my life.

With a beam of 13' it's certainly not a narrowboat.

I know, I know. It's outside budget. But it's certainly a barge, so its spiritual home is on this thread. And this badge has to be the opposite of an M-Sport badge:

Probably going to get snaffled up by a collector. Not a fan of the chrome strips all over it, but a boot badge that says "Diners club limited edition" is rather attractive.

Didn't know these even existed - a modern day 262 (?) coupe.

As for what makes a barge, I'm fairly relaxed, and will happily include big diesels as well, but shouldn't it generally simply be something that stands a chance of being the largest (non-SUV) vehicle in the car park?

Barge definitions are pretty pointless really, not least because we all want different things from our cars, and because the eclectic, random and sometimes plain silliness of this thread is part of its appeal.

However, the finances can't be ignored and a true barge surely has to have the ability to throw a bill at you that has the potential to make you cry?

I like the wheel/grille combo on that, I even like the leaper. Don't like the R badge on a non S/C though.

So where does my Super V8 fit in? A car with a split personality, big wheels, sporty exterior, prominent V8 rumble, but full soft grain leather, picnic trays, TVs, lots of Walnut...

Sorry, but mutton dressed as lamb to me. A leaper on any Jag newer than a series 2 XJ is wrong imo.

Really like that. Very honest advert (although weird that you wouldn't fit the doors).
