Silver wouldn't have been my first choice, but it actually looks pretty handsome. The blue carpets are very high quality and come up really nicely, and the wood veneer is as good as the Jag.

The performance is good. As I've mentioned before, it has a gruffness under acceleration that is quite appealing. It'll happily cruise and mooch, and is very smooth in normal use, albeit with that slight delay in responsiveness that seems to characterise old Mercs (well, mine anyway. I'm never sure if they're supposed to do that or it's just me).

But put your foot down, and there's the sense of the ageing bouncer that will roll his sleeves up and give it large; bring it on if you think you're hard enough. A proper noise and decent go. Perhaps I'm romanticising it, but it has a thuggish charm whilst looking smart and conventional.

There are jobs to be done, but it's a very usable and rather fine-looking car. My over-riding early impression is of quality, and there's no doubting its practicality.

My Eastern European chums, plus the Gloucestershire farmer, at the car wash were all very complimentary. I'm not sure if that means much, but it's always rather nice when strangers comment on your car!*

  • Yes, I know that makes me sound needy and sad.

Plenty of love for all sorts on here, usual suspects beyond big Germans are Jag, Volvo, Saab, Lexus, Citroën... Only downers are on £500+ tax (which affects any make post 03/06) or not-large diesel engines. Just depends on who finds what!

Personally I'm loving these atm,

This W126 looks nice at 2250,

As does this W140 600SEL (despite thread max):

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C563441

And I've posted this 600 with slightly chav alloys at 4k before, but I think it deserves an audience!

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C601598

In other news, who knew the C6 has a little pop up rear spoiler?

That seemingly I can't link to :/

Forgive me, not strictly a barge, getmecoat
1999 Voyager 3.3.
109,000 miles, smooth 'Murican 3.3 V6 and comfy leather armchairs? Can't go much worse for £550... and very practical once you chuck out the back seats!

I always think the 3/4 shot of an SEC really captures what a great looking car it is. Envious of such a fine purchase as they are certainly becoming thin on the ground and rising in value which will inevitably put one beyond my reach when the planets align otherwise.

Enjoy!

Fantastic you bought it, hope the vibrating noise or rumble is nothing too serious.

Could I have first refusal when you come to sell ?

Oh and let's have some pics
No pictures yet as it has some stupid looking 'german' plates which ruin the look of the car. Also one odd alloy....
I've missed this, what did you buy?
It is an W220 S600 bi-turbo, I had not posted any details yet but I have met Nick in real life so he guessed quite accurately wink It was on this thread a few days back on Ebay featuring a 'vibration' noise from the engine, I went to have a look and listen and am pretty sure the noise was not from the engine so bought the car.

By Monday PM it will have a matching set of wheels and normal number plates, at this point I will post pictures. Based on the drive from Banbury to here yesterday evening I am impressed, I am reasonably sure it is as quick if not quicker than my sadly no longer with me SL55 AMG.

Agreed on the 3/4 point, my fave too. I also have a c124 which I thought initially was better proportioned but having owned both for several months, I'm in the c126 camp for 3/4 over the shoulder glances!

LT posted this stunning ¾ view in Strela's epic. But the truth is, there isn't a bad angle on the SEC:

The only tiny bad thing are the door handles. Practical, from what I remember, but a bit ugly. Other than that the SEC is wonderful.

Yes, the C126 door handles are inexplicably rubbish. I can only assume that was like some medieval artists who would introduce a deliberate tiny error into their paintings or sculptures on the grounds that to consider yourself capable of perfection was deemed an insult to God.

Strela's wondrous thread is on the restoration of his R107 -
Before -

After -

It is one of the finest & most discursive pieces of textual timewasting available on today's electronic media.

The whole thing starts here:
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I made a calm and principled comparison of the C126 with the 1970 Dodge Charger at the top of page 15, though to understand way you really need to pick it up from page 14 here...

Also listed on M3Cutters forum. Could be had for closer to £6000 by the look of it wink

Looks lovely though. I imagine KGF / 4Star and the like could spin a nice profit on it...

Although in extremis the car could be lifted using them, I guess smile
