Now on the train and en route to the barge. As excited as a 7 year old on Christmas eve, or even as excited as a 40 year old picking up a new barge.

Ben
Brilliant! I'm about as excited as you already and I'm not off till tuesday. Looking forward to the reveal!

"Monster" and "Not for the faint hearted" - With 215BHP? Is he sure? laugh.

Another 'Fixer upper' Bi Turbo S600, although a bit more reasonable than the one with the seized engine for £6k!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/mercedes-benz-s600-limou...

ABC pump has failed which is around a £1k bill, but the pumps are near the top of potential failures on these, so getting it out the way early into ownership isn't a bad idea (It wouldn't bother fitting the one from a breaker unless you're doing the labor yourself - Its either knackered or likely will be relatively soon, while a new pump is good for 60k+ if looked after).

As long as the rest of the car checks out and you can build a reasonable bork warchest from a good haggle it could be a good buy for someone.

Well that was a long day. Left home at 06:15 to get the train to Bournemouth which is a fair trek from Cambridge. On arrival I was met by bmthnick1981 in his modern E-class in which we went to his house to look over his (now my) W140 CL600. After coffee, paperwork inspection and a test drive the deal was done.

Here she is in the New Forest on the way home.

During the last week we have exchanged emails including highlights of the few bad spots on the car and agreeing the price so the dealing bit of the day was very easy and was a really pleasant buying unseen experience. Nick was an excellent person to buy from.

The 170 mile drive home via the New Forest was fantastic, I realised how much I missed my previous W140 and that was merely a 500. This car's party trick is acceleration from 50mph up to quite high speed, very quiet but the speedo needle keeps moving quickly clockwise.

Minor points are I suspect a rear wheel bearing may be in the car's near future and possibly a front ARB droplink, which was highlighted pre sale.

Of course no barge should be completely flawless and for the first 5 miles or so the passenger seat belt butler was really determined to give the non existent passenger his/her seatbelt, it would present then give up for a few seconds then try again. Rather distracting but seems to have fixed itself now.

The final point of this post / essay is that yesterday evening I remarked to the mrs that the car was exactly like one a family friend had new in 1998 and they can't have made to many of them. The car I bought today was the same one so it wasn't even my first experience of the car. Surely a good omen.

Congratulations, 12 cylinder of authentisch Deutsche smoker barge.

The seat belt butler issue was all part of the age enhanced, safety features of the car, no chance of the passenger not putting on that seatbelt.

Very nice!
Its very rare for rear wheel bearings to fail on these - have you checked the tyres? My 129 sounded like the rear wheel bearings were shot but a change of tyres sorted it.
If they are a V pattern tyre they are notorious for it.

Congratulations! A 12 cylinder Mercedes as predicted!

320 miles done today in the 190. It's a lovely little thing and very happy cruising at 95 (ish) with surprising comfort and composure.

Haven't properly investigated just a few odd noises from the rear. Will spend a bit of time the next few days giving the car a more thorough going over and start to prepare a job sheet.

Glad you got home safely, I was quite sad waving it off;

I hope you find the time to get the minor niggles sorted that I never got round to. It's a great car and I'm pleased it has gone to another enthusiast. It's always pleasant selling or buying to or from a like minded threadist, it's so nice not having to faff around with eBay and adverts etc.

I only didn't offer it to you R129 due to your recent w140 'purchase', I assumed you wouldn't be in the market for another.... Maybe you can have 'first dibs' on it from Ben...

You certainly can.

I have told a few others who knew the car when it was new, they can't believe the coincidence. Not surprised you were sad to see it go, it's ace what were you thinking wink

The propshaft centre bearing can cause some funny noises and clonks too.

What a lovely thing that is, congrats!

Congratulations on the 600 - it remaining with a threadist and you knowing it when new gives a fantastic circularity to it.

Another thread pool car like the w124 280 estate! I really want a v12 next...

I have persuaded my father to come along for the barge meet tomorrow. The weekend's driving will be Edinburgh-Midlands-The Lakes-Lancaster-Birmingham-Edinburgh. A reasonable test for a car from1988!

It wouldn't have worked for me right now. But next time.... First dibs booked! In the meantime, Ben, enjoy it and spend money on it lavishly!
