Is a 16-plate S class a forward projection of entry into this thread!?

Haha, if I'd known you were going to photograph that wheel I would have hammered the brakes less on the way over.

Pretty good pics considering it never let up raining.

Hi all, just enjoying a restorative bottle of ale before bed. Poor Harry probably won't be home for another 20-30 mins yet, mind you the way that s350 goes I could be wrong!

Thanks Harry for doing all the driving, I'm sure you'll be knackered by the time you get to '/city'. Although we agree it's too big for daily use, the way that thing covers ground on poor roads in poor conditions is remarkable; doubly so if, like me, you've no experience of a modern upmarket car.

Great to see the few of you we managed to meet, apologies to CdG for not putting name to face to alias when we were introduced; and doubly sorry I didn't see your fantastic Jag.

Next time we'll have to plan it so that we have more 'time over the target'.

Off to bed, it's been a looooong day.

ETA: just looked up the specs. 457lb/ft at 1600 rpm!!! That explains a lot!

It was great to see some threadists today, some great cars and plenty of material for classified browsing, even though we experienced the full on extra-wet Lake District rain. The pair of special XJSs and the 944 were lovely, I liked Alec's Super 8 (in particular the tables!), but the highlight was a drive in r129's mega mile and legendary W124.

Even on a brief drive, after adjusting to the lack of immediate go, it was obvious that it would be very satisfying to stoke it up like a steam train and cover some serious ground on long trips. The ride was fantastic as well, so I clearly have work to do on my 300E.

I managed to miss the new S-class, annoying as I would have liked a look around especially after looking at the pictures above.

I look forward to Gayden, and seeing more of harrykul and mccrackenj if you can make it - unfortunately we were pretty wet through by the time you arrived!

Wish I'd have put some effort into attending today. Only a couple of hours drive for me and looks like there was a decent turnout. That old Porsche looks lovely.

More great soggy photos. smile

In case anyone cares, I've just been through my fuel receipts for the weekend and we averaged 20.3 mpg which is a proper surprise. The little computer of optimism doesn't work in my car, so I suppose I'll have to add that to the fix-it list.

The XJS also needs some screen wash jets, if anyone knows of a source. One's feeble and one's practically blocked frown

Try unblocking the jets with a needle/pin.

Then just run through some plain tap water for a little while to wash them out. After that, use your favourite screen wash. Blockages are usually caused by people using Fairy Liquid.

Could be sturdy snot of gunge rather than broken, I suppose. Perhaps a soak in bloody hot water might melt some gunge out. Previously had a poke about and it didn't help.

If you can get the nozzle off the car, try putting it in the dishwasher. That shifts most things.

It was a particularly Jagtastic meet-up and I can feel the allure. The interiors are just so cuddly and calming.

Meanwhile in Merc-land having both the 190e 2.6 and mega-mile W124 to drool at made me even more determined to get my R129 paint finished before the next one, and seriously budget for a total respray and interior resto on my E39.

I was sorry to miss the new S-class, that must be a major undertaking. I would have liked to see it next to the supercharged X350, which itself dominated the car park in a brooding way, like a nuclear powered aircraft carrier in metallic dark cherry.

Incidentally 20 mpg is a lot better than I would have predicted from the XJS, you must be pleased with that.

20 MPG is great. I only get 25-28 from my 6 cylinder micro-engined cars.

This 190 2.6 with leather looks okay - the ad is very thorough in any case. The colour combination just doesn't quite do it for me. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C719346

Nice little barges, even if a little buzzy on the motorway at high speed. Lovely for wafting around town and the countryside though. Mine is set to do 1,100 miles this weekend and I have really enjoyed it so far. I even cleaned it again this morning!

Looks like a good meeting, did someone mention Gaydon for the next one? I bet they would do a 'barges' parking area for us. Really like the look of the current S-Class something of a return to form IMO.

Well that was a long day. Left home at 06:15 to get the train to Bournemouth which is a fair trek from Cambridge. On arrival I was met by bmthnick1981 in his modern E-class in which we went to his house to look over his (now my) W140 CL600. After coffee, paperwork inspection and a test drive the deal was done.

Here she is in the New Forest on the way home.

During the last week we have exchanged emails including highlights of the few bad spots on the car and agreeing the price so the dealing bit of the day was very easy and was a really pleasant buying unseen experience. Nick was an excellent person to buy from.

The 170 mile drive home via the New Forest was fantastic, I realised how much I missed my previous W140 and that was merely a 500. This car's party trick is acceleration from 50mph up to quite high speed, very quiet but the speedo needle keeps moving quickly clockwise.

Minor points are I suspect a rear wheel bearing may be in the car's near future and possibly a front ARB droplink, which was highlighted pre sale.

Of course no barge should be completely flawless and for the first 5 miles or so the passenger seat belt butler was really determined to give the non existent passenger his/her seatbelt, it would present then give up for a few seconds then try again. Rather distracting but seems to have fixed itself now.

The final point of this post / essay is that yesterday evening I remarked to the mrs that the car was exactly like one a family friend had new in 1998 and they can't have made to many of them. The car I bought today was the same one so it wasn't even my first experience of the car. Surely a good omen.
Glad you got home safely, I was quite sad waving it off;

I hope you find the time to get the minor niggles sorted that I never got round to. It's a great car and I'm pleased it has gone to another enthusiast. It's always pleasant selling or buying to or from a like minded threadist, it's so nice not having to faff around with eBay and adverts etc.
That looks brilliant! Well done.

The W140 bug is biting again here but so hard to find a decent one :-(

Thanks for the offer r129, however I will be heading up the west side of the country to visit family on the way.

30k mile Lexus LS430. Not a car for the heart, perhaps, but for under thread maximum budget you could demolish a lot of miles in comfort. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Look at the yellow and green. Glorious! http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...

So wrong, but I rather like it. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...

Picked another barge(?!) at the weekend there for boat/race car towing.

Big enough to fit all additional wheels/spares in the back and enough power to tow it all along.

2003 Audi A4 3.0 Quattro Sport Avant - not sure if it meets barge standards but thought i'd stick it up here anyway.

Good to see you all yesterday, despite the weather and time constraints.

The big bus was really very good for the task: very comfortable over the 500 odd miles yesterday, very quick and surefooted too. Averaged 36mpg over the day too, which was very impressive given that I wasn't sparing those horses!

Looking forward to the next one- hopefully I will be in a car that is mine!

While too nippy and compact for full-fat bargeism, you've got a great engine and a highly practical and attractive package there. Excellent choice, I would love to see it at a future Loser's Conference - it's a car I've always fancied.

P.S., I have taken the liberty of mending your pic embedding:
