That's awesome, good find. It's interesting going back from a modern(ish) barge to an old Merc, isn't it? (I've moved from a Citroen C6). The Mercs hold up rather well, I think.
I haven't got bored of dropping all the windows of my W123 Coupé yet, on sunny days, and I've had it 6 years..!
the Merc just feels a lot more relaxed - the Audi can be difficult to drive sedately due to the low gearing so it's always ready to go.I haven't got bored of dropping all the windows of my W123 Coupé yet, on sunny days, and I've had it 6 years..!
Aside from the 3 sec interval trying to get a response from the throttle pedal, the Merc delivers nicely (so far)

Its very different to the adaptive Electronic Shift Pattern used in the A8/S8.

If your gearbox is the same as mine (4 speed) you'll find it will always start in second. If its in 'E' mode that will hold true no matter what you do. In 'S' mode if you nail it off the mark it will drop to first and take off like a scalded cat. 'E' mode will also change up earlier, be more inclined to hang onto a taller gear and soften changes slightly.

thanks, my comments were slightly tongue in cheek but appreciate the response. There'll be the occasional scalded cat action but think it'll be in E mode more often than not. The extra 40 ft lbs torque over the 300ce and ce24v can really be felt, so no need to rev it harder to make progress IME.Its very different to the adaptive Electronic Shift Pattern used in the A8/S8.

How did you find that? I've a very big soft spot for the big French one.
I've loved it. It's more comfortable even than our new W126, particularly in the back. Fabulous to drive, annoying as hell to work on because there's no room in the engine bay, or anywhere else. More reliable than everybody expects, though. Mine will be up for sale by the weekend, if anybody here fancies a go... CharlesdeGaulle said:
Exactement. 8 is merely 2/3 of a proper engine!
I could not agree more.In other barge news how is the thread's W140 seatbelt knowledge? My passenger seatbelt won't retract, simple enough I thought but apparently there are two levels of seatbelt tension lock controlled by a sensor in the seat.
Have not got loads of time to fix it as I really need to be sorting out my SL55 to sell and some bits on Clare's S211...
Any ideas ?
Ben

Thanks, yes the petrols are very rare. I've never driven one, but the 2.7 V6 diesel suits the car well I think. It's not quick by PH standards but it is by mine! More relevant, It lopes along effortlessly in a high top gear on the trans-european autoroutes. The final 3 litre HDi is even better (more powerful, and slightly better economy) but still megabucks...
I'm judging the diesels unfairly because they're not stinky Euro3 - with the dpf they're a lot nicer. I'd just rather have a petrol!I've also found out that they came with reclining electric rear seats as an option, got to have those!
