That I didn't know! Not that it would have changed my decision though. As fine as the E63s are, I most definitely wanted an XJR. We have an LPG'd XJ6 Sport as our daily driver and I love it, to the point where I just wanted one that was newer, better condition, less tired and, of course, much, much quicker
Still, it would be nice if it had the exhaust note of the E63 as well!
Personally, I wouldn't have mentioned the price. You were fked as soon as you brought it up.Still, it would be nice if it had the exhaust note of the E63 as well!

If you'd rather have that car on your drive than the money in the back then it was money well spent.
A cheaper example may have cost you £3k in getting it up to your standards.

Sure, I get that a lot of people wouldn't spend that money on a 10 year old XJR, but so what? Yes, I would have been happier if it had cost less, but it suited my circumstances.

Well, it's nice to see that there's still people who'll pay good money for them. Tbf, if I could get £8k for mine I'd be pretty happy!
Given what you paid I don't doubt it! Prices do seem to have risen while fuel was 99p/litre but doesn't mean they sell. At least that's what I told the chap whose red 54 plate XJR has not shifted at 6 when I left thread max on the table...
I think he means that this being a thread with a nominal £5K top price limit you are bound to get your leg pulled a bit.
However more generally I note that on PH generally (not so much on this particular thread) there are plenty of self-appointed experts who will always tell you you could have / should have been able to buy anything at half the price you paid.
I have had plenty of people tell me I'm mad to put the money into my cars that I've put in. "No E39, Porsche 944, R129 is worth sinking any money into - you can buy a minter for £1k / £4k / £5k" etc.
My take: If what you want is a really excellent example of a car you like very much, a type that was once hideously expensive and remains fearsomely complex, and have the money to make it happen, then do it. 99 times out of a hundred you will either pay a lot of money for the very rare genuinely superb example, or buy a less good one and spend a small to medium sized fortune making it how you want it. I support both methodologies!

Ok, get where you're coming from now
Not that I have to justify anything, but to get some perspective, just take a look at my profile - I've had a whole heap of cars, all of which I've spent time and money improving but rarely seen that reflected in the price I got when I came to sell. I had fun doing it, but I just don't have the time for it any more - I just wanted the best I could find without all the running around trying to get things done, finding parts and getting them fitted. Yes, I paid over the odds but not having to spend what little spare time I have at the moment faffing about was worth it. As I said, both the Range Rover and Bentley needed big money spending on them - £6k minimum - that's something I don't need to worry about now in both cash and time terms.
Now, can we get back to everyone telling me what a wonderful car I have?

That XJ-R looks fab. The only downside for me is that at £13K, its getting towards W211 E63AMG territory and that's where my cash would go, if I had that sort of budget.

No. The internals for the supercharged engine are stronger, and of course it's lower compression, so of necessity different pistons.
As I understand it the valvetrains are different too: the n/a engines have variable valve timing but the supercharged engines don't need it.
Ok thanks , 8k though, ouch As I understand it the valvetrains are different too: the n/a engines have variable valve timing but the supercharged engines don't need it.
Has anyone posted this yet?

Seemingly nice and cheap XJS even with years of disuse... Barge pole time?

Details, details, details!
520i manual, 118k, Lots of history, drives lovely but paint is pretty bad. Interior is good bar the drivers seat (holed) and a rear door card. Seems remarkably rust free from what I can see! Was sub thread budget.Near Reading?

Thanks everyone, I'm ridiculously pleased with it
It looks absolutely lovely! And well worth paying good money for. Always better to pay more in the first instance and get something really good from the outset IMHO.Geekman said:
If you don't mind me asking, roughly how much did you pay? I've got a suspicion that my Super V8 (XJR with a few extra options) is worth quite a bit more than I paid for it but it's hard to know for sure.
At £13k I certainly paid top money. I know there are ones out there a lot cheaper, but I wanted one that hadn't been to the moon and back and was feeling tired. It also enabled me to part-ex the Range Rover and Bentley, both of which needed some big money throwing at them. It's only done 63k miles and been well looked after - it was also local, and the way my work is at the moment traipsing all around the country looking at cars simply wasn't possible.31mph said:

I've just had a go by hand with some compound and it might just be the knock on the head from the bootlid shutting on me... but it looks better! With a proper mop it might actually get rid of the scratches!

Bargistas, What's the gen on W211 (2002-2009) E classes?
Someone with considerably more knowledge than me will be along shortly to help, but in the meantime I can offer one snippet, you will be better off looking at the facelift cars that appeared from 2006, which had numerous issues resolved.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
