I'm not saying this is a good example (it may be) but on price alone this has to be something of a landmark for what is to my mind a great looking barge.

They aren't hard to rewire yourself if you can use a soldering iron.
Just peg the loom out on a large board and remove the insulation. Cut one wire at a time leaving about an inch of the old wire wherever it goes into a connector. Solder the new wire in and seal with heat shrink plastic. At the end re-wrap with insulation tape. My R129 is getting that done later this year.
I can solder wires together, but for me un-soldering a PCB and then soldering in new wires would see the throttle body become scrap!
The wires themselves should be ok, although the long length may be getting tired and stiffer, as said, if you have gone as far as to remove the eta you may as well add some new wires in, I'd do the same, cut most of it away and solder the wires together near the end. Then add some extra insulation incase the insulation breaks down again. DO THE WIRES ONE AT A TIME, you don't want to have that problem.
Before I sent my throttle body away I slit the outer sheath for a view of the wires - a mush of copper strands and insulation fragments. I reckon once it was disturbed, probably for the first time since construction, it would never have ran. The chap who rewired it also checked the potentiometers to make sure they were still working - that sort of thing is beyond me, even though I will tackle most things myself.

Probably needs a lot spending on it but I do quite like the look of these old 450 SLC's £4,500

Fantastic. I love the SLC, and I love 70s brown and velour. I'm glad it's a long way from me because otherwise I might have taken a punt on it, and these can be very expensive follies.
Awesome. I've long had a thing for these. A colleague of mine had a -shall we say "patinated"- one in metallic pale (thistle?) green, and with me in my gold ratbag C123 we made quite the pair, bombing around town together.
The MOT history of that doesn't indicate a much-loved garage queen, although most advisories don't recur so it may not be too bad, and the most recent MOT looks good with only one comment. Only 4000 miles over the past 7 years.

I really want it, but do I want it more than not being disfigured/maimed/divorced? Tricky one.
I just actually clicked through to the ad- OMG VELOUR. How disfigured are we talking? (can you be just a bit divorced?!) I know it didn't go so well last time...

It's all relative, I'm still here, still complete and still married, so I think I sort-of got away with it.

Anyway, obviously I've e-mailed the seller anyway!

Talking of braahn... I spotted this SEC outside a large used car dealer this morning. I was tempted to park in the Tesco next door and have a nose just for the hell of it but figured I might end up doing something stupid (i.e. buy it). What is a solid car worth these days?

Strange how another sec has popped up local to me, my 560 was only 5 mins away too. Slight paint mismatch on the rear quarter but looks good value

Managed to squeeze the toddler into the back of the 560 last night, so has a test of its family capability coming up this weekend - I'm obviously hoping it smashes it, although watching the 2 year old standing with mucky feet all over the centre console whilst perching herself on the front centre armrest was mildly horrifying.

Quite warming to the e320 coupe too - the fact it's bodywork need doing means I care much less where I park it, so acts a great foil to the 560. Plus it's more capacious interior means it too can partake in family duties.

Could well mean I keep both mercs and offload the S8

Very nice indeed. Anyone know what the reliability is meant to be like on these? I really do fancy a V8 but at the same time they scream money pit.
I ran one for a year and a half. The engine is fundamentally very good but the cooling system is feeble. They run at tremendous heat and pressure, have a myriad of hoses and some of the components are made of plastic which doesn't age well. I changed virtually every cooling component but predictably the only part I didn't change - a small hose at the rear of the engine - spectacularly popped 6 months later! Figure on changing the entire lot with OEM parts for long term reliability

It can be done but it's not going to be Volvo/Lexus hop in and forget barging.

Cheap. But what isn't with 180k? Suspect it will sell before the end of the weekend because of the price though...

Another cheap S600 biturbo: the seller sounds like a less than ideal character to buy a car from though, and I suspect sorting the rust and the airbag light would involve some serious wallet emptying.

Did you mean "cheap"?

More like "bloody optimistic", I'd say....

I don't see why an airbag light or minor rust would be significantly worse than any other car to be honest.
Airbags will be standard S class and body repairs are largely the same for any car (unless someone jacks them up 'because its an S class').

Seller reckons he has a 911 Turbo but can't afford to insure a knackered £5k shed. Of course you do. Seems legit laugh

A guy I spoke to about these a while ago said that generally, if there's a lot of visible rust on the body, it'll be a lot worse underneath. May be worth a punt but I think you'd have to really know where to look rust-wise.

One of those engines would be amazing in an Ultima. Just throw the attached shed away biggrin

Yes, it would.

Me being me, I would take the engine and find something a bit more "shed" to put the engine in and create something of a sleeper.

How does one usually go about determining what engine will fit into what old banger of a car... I'm thinking Merc V12 vs Vauxhall Carlton...

There's just something absolutely RIGHT about these cars
Lovely, great spot. If that checks out, I reckon it'll be worth every penny of the asking. Get yourself back to that Tesco car-park and have a nosey!
Most dealers seem to think they're worth £10million at the moment so that one looks fairly priced. Fab colours, Impala over Brazil, yummy.
That colour combo is just perfect for me

OK, it's not exactly an old banger, but this Hungarian guy put one in an old W140
