I think it depends on your definition of decent but you can find 2006 examples for not much over thread budget.

The W221 are certainly rather handsome, especially for a modern barge. The V12 badge looks awesome too.

A V12 CL still looks like the best bargain though.

Gosh.. what have I missed?

Apparently the only problems are 1 rust bubble, intermittent soft close and a dodgy CD changer - think I can live with (manage to find someone to fix) those.

Check the AC works as it can apparently cost £4k to fix on those old mercs. I think it is due to half the car needing to come apart.

I looked at a mint coupe version of this car some years ago. But the seller was a dodgy geezer in a Maldon based garage. He claimed the "air con just needs a re-gas", so I walked away. These cars can cost a fortune to put right down the line, so at the very least I wanted it tip top to start with.

Let me know when you are viewing/collecting, going by the location on eBay the car should be a few miles from my house. The specialist mentioned in the ad is also the one I may get to fix the air-con on my CL500.

That age could need the wiring loom checked, and check all the springs as well as the exhaust.

You might need a mittyvac to find out if one of the long lines is causing the soft close problem or if its the vacuum unit itself.

I really hope that the sore head was alcohol-induced, and that the purchase was therefore a moment of booze-fuelled madness-on-a-whim; they're the best types of buy, and guaranteed to promote domestic harmony.

I thought I'd open some worms for the long weekend.

I'm starting to think that my X350 XJR isn't really a barge. The same will apply to other marques too.
Its power delivery is just too damned vicious. I don't think a barge should make female passengers screech when deploying some (ahem) power in a straight line, like when joining a motorway, for example.

Bear with me. The X351 XJR is even worse. I test drove several before deciding instead to buy several cars (and a kitchen for Mission Control) and whilst they are another step up in comfort and toys, they are properly, properly comically rapid.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against comically quick cars, but I think to be a barge, the acceleration should be unnoticeable. Should make your other half squeal, and not make elderly parents silent. (Although that last one is a sneaky bonus).

I think that something like a Bentley Eight might possibly be the bargiest of barges. Big, comfortable, wafty, potentially woefully expensive but not possessing quite enough oompf to terrify passengers.


Just a thought
