One of my dad's friends had a B plate BMW e28 528i in dark blue that I think started my obcession with old German cars. I was really pleased to give him the chance of driving my 190 2.6 a few weeks ago. He now has a mint M535. The BMWs from the 80s seem a lot more fragile than the mercs, but perhaps this is down to them not being used regularly?

I think an e34 535 would be fine as a daily driver - I know of several e34s in general use. One of the best cars BMW have ever built.

Wow, what a machine. I take it they don't really "only" have 510 bhp, or that they can be remapped to release rather more? It seems strange that a 5.5 twin turbo v12 has not advanced over the last generation at all.
The peak power doesn't give the picture of how the power is delivered - the S55 has a similar peak, but the delivery is totally different.

Lovely car, but the slightly baggy driver's seat and the incorrectly hinged button cover (as stupid as it sounds) put me off on a car that cost such a huge sum originally. Silly details that should be sorted for >£100k.
The drivers seat was one of the things I spotted as well.

I imagine there is a lot of getting in and out to open the doors for passengers!

When you say incorrectly hinged I guess you mean hinged to the right rather than to the left.

Quite a few you see advertised don't have the cover at all, I guess they snap off.

I'd never actually buy one of these, they are just one of the things I keep coming back to when browsing...

There is a W221 S65 AMG with 200K miles for sale for 17K. I'd love to meet the person who buys that!!

They re-hinged the button cover in the facelift. As you say, annoying - surely must just have been cost cutting to omit it from the early cars? See a lot with the cover snapped off also.

XJRs must have become significantly faster with each generation, as my older six cylinder XJR was a *bit* slow.
That is exactly what has happened. The newer cars are much lighter, much more powerful and have much more efficient gearboxes. It shouldn't be a surprise that they're much faster!

It's a decent car and I like them but the E39 makes it look pretty stone-age. The E34 was never a clear class leader even when when it first came out, whereas the E39 was straight to the top of the class when new and was regularly beating its newer competitors in reputable group tests even towards the end of its long life.

I've been looking at the W221 S600s recently. They look amazing value especially compared to the S65s.

I know this is the 1 to 5 large thread but this really caught my eye:

I think the interior looks great and it's loaded with every possible toy.

MOT history has a weird year where mileage jumps 50K miles but I think it looks like a mis entry by the tester rather than anything onerous...
Thanks for posting that.
Properly nice motor smile

Just been to pick up the wife's TVR. We had a bit of a play on the way back and there's really not that much between them up to 70-ish; the XJR definitely had the edge over 70.

I came out of an E28 528i (X reg) to go into the Jag 4.2. My pals all thought I was mad and told me I'd be bankrupt in a matter of months. The Jag proved them all wrong.

I saw that one too, love the exterior & interior colours, but not sure if I could live with the wood, looks a bit too orange in the photos. I personally prefer a nice richer brown walnut, like my jag:

Can't stop thinking about that V12! May put the Jag up for sale next year, but if anybody is interested let me know smile

I would seriously consider remapping the S600, 605hp & 980nm torque once tuned!

I have been pootling about in the 300e today. I'm reminded how much I like it - in my mind the reasonable sized straight 6/4 door combination is one of the best. Smooth, with enough power, but not so much you can't use it properly on modern roads.

What's the ultimate straight 6 saloon barge? Some ideas:

BMW e34 535
Jaguar xjr (straight 6)
Mercedes w124 e36 AMG
BMW e39 alpina
MkII Jag. preferably the 3.4.

ETA, saw a lovely early grey 2.4 MkII this morning. smile

I think they do it because there's a risk of cloning

But the chances of someone having stolen an identical car, and wanting to clone it during the window that you happen to be selling yours is very small. Especially with older/rarer/cheaper cars such as this.

Different for new exotic stuff maybe, but I might be wrong

Perhaps not as powerful as one might like, but the current S class with a 6 pot petrol would surely be in with a shout here? Or are we talking in the 5k range? If so....E65 740i with the straight 6?

The 740i in the e65 remained a v8.
