Am I just naïve? Why hide the plate- all we can do is check its insured and the MOT history, no? It would put me off the car.
The only reason a seller would do it is because he's mad.

I have been pootling about in the 300e today. I'm reminded how much I like it - in my mind the reasonable sized straight 6/4 door combination is one of the best. Smooth, with enough power, but not so much you can't use it properly on modern roads.

What's the ultimate straight 6 saloon barge? Some ideas:

BMW e34 535
Jaguar xjr (straight 6)
Mercedes w124 e36 AMG
BMW e39 alpina
MkII Jag. preferably the 3.4.

ETA, saw a lovely early grey 2.4 MkII this morning. smile
Any of those would do. Is the Lexus a 6? If it is, that has to be in with a shout, surely?

Perhaps not as powerful as one might like, but the current S class with a 6 pot petrol would surely be in with a shout here? Or are we talking in the 5k range? If so....E65 740i with the straight 6?
The 740i in the e65 remained a v8.
Also there are no straight-six engines in the current S-Class, only fours (diesel), V6, V8 and V12.

I don't know if there is any way to visually tell if a 140 has soft closing? I think it was only standard on 500 and up, also that will need the wiring loom checking.

Interesting that alot of these seem to be appearing for sale recently, the raising petrol prices cant be helping there value either.

I've been looking at the W221 S600s recently. They look amazing value especially compared to the S65s.

I know this is the 1 to 5 large thread but this really caught my eye:

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...

I think the interior looks great and it's loaded with every possible toy.

MOT history has a weird year where mileage jumps 50K miles but I think it looks like a mis entry by the tester rather than anything onerous...
I saw that one too, love the exterior & interior colours, but not sure if I could live with the wood, looks a bit too orange in the photos. I personally prefer a nice richer brown walnut, like my jag:

Can't stop thinking about that V12! May put the Jag up for sale next year, but if anybody is interested let me know smile

I would seriously consider remapping the S600, 605hp & 980nm torque once tuned!
The interiors are nicer on the equivalent Jaguar are nicer and truth be told, I think the Jaguars look prettier than the Mercedes in all guises, but the V12 is on another level compared to the Jaguar V8s in my opinion, even the later Supercharged 5.0. Similar power outputs when standard or lightly modified, but the torque of a standard 600 is a good 150ftlb more at similar revs than even an 'R' X351.

Although personally I feel that the W221 S600s are a bit strong given there were not many mechanical updates to speak of: ~£18,000 for a tidy example of a 05/06 W221 compared to maybe ~£8k for a tidy 03/04 W220 with the same mechanicals and many similar toys, although, I'll be the first to admit W220/C215s do feel a little bit 'dated' in terms of competing with modern "mega barges" in terms of design and ergonomics so I can completely understand why someone would go for the newer cars.

A remap is definitely recommended! Had my W220 done at eurocharged a couple of weeks ago and I'm very impressed.

I noticed an advert where they did this, then took a picture of the paperwork, where someone had written the reg on the outside cover of the service history rolleyes.

Couple of nice old mercs:

This seems cheap for a 107 SL, even with the chrome arches.

One for harrykul? Over budget, but it is a 560.

Thanks for posting that.
Properly nice motor smile
I have actually viewed this car, it was sat rather forlornly right at the back of the dealers yard covered in dust. I sat inside it, the wood trim isn't as orange as in the pics but some of the switchgear felt past its best I.e creaky volume controls on steering etc... Very well specced and would clean up nicely but the squeaks and groans of the interior did disappoint me so left hastily.

That does look tidy CdeG, but if I'm going to go for it, all boxes must be ticked: late model, fluted leather door cards, elec rear blind and 300 bhp are key. The linked car had considerable corrosion at the rear in the recent past, and would need thorough investigation.

Somehow locked out of posting from my phone this week, but a couple of bargey things to report.
I made an enquiry for an SEC just this afternoon: awaiting response.
Came across a project A124 320 and called the seller the next day, but was too late. Gutted.
Been driving my dads e90 330d for the past fortnight and was very impressed- ride quality aside, its a great daily.
The s124 has returned from 10 weeks away. Looks lovely and the ride is sublime.
Sent an email to a well known merc vendor to gauge interest for my s124: my 993 threw me a bill well over thread budget! The cost of running these fancy cars is making me reconsider running a shed (or a small van) as a daily.

Consider yourselves updated!

My thoughts exactly, not such amazing build quality as I was hoping for. My BMW e65 has done over 100k but everything is still tight and squeak/rattle fee. I looked at a few 2007/8 CL mercs and I found something amiss in everyone I viewed, usually with sub 50k on the clock too,

Our Discovery 3 has over 200k on it and is also still squeak and rattle free, and it's not as if Land Rover have the best reputation in the world.

I have a friend who has a W124 E230 who is experiencing erratic gear changes under load, he says it's as if it can't make its' mind up. Aside from checking ATF level and potentially replacing with new, can anyone suggest where we would be looking?

Thanks in advance, Stuart.

I am really looking forward to a W221 when they approach thread budget. The W220 feels like a step back in terms of build quality, size and looks from the W140 the W221 feels like a return to form, not quite as solid as the W140 but when inflation is removed it is effectively a cheaper car.

Note: experience of 220 and 221 is from being driven to airports, have driven neither or possibly a 220 at a Mercedes track event but can't recall

Have never been in a 220 but have been in a 221....was a very nice car indeed. Quiet, comfortable....what you'd like from a car like that. In terms of refinement, to be honest, wouldn't say it's much different to the E65, perhaps marginally better ride quality, but not that much in it from what I remember.

I would guess the dash has been ripped apart at some point...

That looks great, not sure if they're standard wheels on the 540, but I see them a lot on the lesser-engined models which is a bonus for this one.

Imagine a V8 having only a single exhaust these days, unthinkable!
