Loving this thread! Im 23 and having been following this thread's ethos for some time! Currently have a 330ci M sport cab and a Lexus LS400 which together owe me less than the barge budget!

You are very welcome. Lots of pictures of the Lexus please.

But only if it is a metallic pastel shade with leather the colour of a rearward collostrum ejection.

It could have been worse. But it wasn't. One day, that will be me. And you.

Shameless picture whoring of the barge if it's allowed after a wash and a drive in the New Forest earlier smile

And this was taken the other day (hence sunshine!!)

Do you know what I really quite like these now. That Bangle guy was clever. All those controversial designs look distinctive 10-12 years later and less dated than some other marques. Indeed a 535d sport looks better to these eyes than the current gen model. Your car is certainly worth more than £2.5K, for Pete's sake!

New Forest, not far from me. I often take my CLK430 for a blast from Christchurch through the forest to Lyndhurst on a Saturday morning....

Looks nice, although I think the wheels are 1 or 2 inches too big.

I'm the other side of the Forest to you, I'm around Chandler's Ford/Eastleigh way.

I am glad I bothered to clean it and get some decent pics for my advert; there are other bits I haven't done to the car for quite some time which I should get around to doing and taking more pictures (thoroughly cleaning the door/bonnet/boot shuts, inside petrol filler flap etc, using a rubber treatment for the door/boot seals and so on) but the car is still very presentable and mechanically it's very well sorted. This is the main reason I'm NOT letting it go cheap. I'll just keep running it if it doesn't sell. Too many cars claiming FSH and not much else, FSH means very little on big barges of this era, FSH doesn't tell you if the suspension is extremely tired, whether it's had common problems sorted etc etc.

What do people think of Vectra Estates?

I'm after something with alot of room in the back like a S210 Merc without the chronic rust problems.

They seem to have a huge rear area and fairly square rear end compared to a S211 to maximise rear space. Apparently a longer wheelbase and longer overall length than a Vectra hatch.

3.2 V6's or you can just squeeze in a 2.8 petrol turbo before the £500 tax range.

Obviously not as nice/luxurious as a Merc and also wrong wheel drive, however I've seen older, high spec 3.2's for £1k and £1.5k can get you a pre tax rise 2.8 turbo.

These shouldn't really rust at all and maintenance should be reasonably priced.
Pretty good cars. Sure, a 2.2 DTI or 1.8 isn't a particularly nice car to drive but the 3.2 V6 is quite nice and the VXR is a really good drive.

Comfortable too.
Have a look at this:
http://www.evo.co.uk/vauxhall/vectra/14196/mitsubi...

They also seem (like pretty much all modern Vauxhalls) to have a remarkable knack for requiring relatively little maintenance (and what maintenance there is, really is very cheap) and they just don't rust. And the boot is enormous. Staggeringly big.

I have a LOT of time for them.

If you want a six cylinder diesel, there's even a 3.0 litre V6 but it's fairly rare and not outright that powerful, but it feels more than it is on paper.

Scratch that, read this:
http://www.evo.co.uk/vauxhall/vectra/9067/vauxhall...

Gives you better perspective on actually owning one. They weren't just popular because they were cheap - living with one you realise that it's just a very, very well thought-out car. Much more so than it might appear on a brief encounter.

I was whizzing home tonight in the r129 when I passed a Nissan GTR ambling along at a good 70 mph less than me. As we entered some roadworks I see him rush up behind and a fix himself to my boot lid for the duration. As soon as the roadworks ended, I indicated left and let him blast away. Two miles later, having resumed a decent cruising speed, I blow past him again. Once more he was compelled to demonstrate (1) that he was not paying attention to the rear view mirror and (2) that he is terribly insecure. Tedious. I share this only because I know you'll understand.

Today is the 110th anniversary of the first ever motor Grand Prix, held at Le Mans in France. This seems to have gone entirely unnoticed.

Have had this happen before, most frustrating.

The funniest was when my dad was driving, overtook a Ferrari California.... Ferrari guy right on the boot of my dad's car.... Traffic clears, deploys all 552bhp and said California couldn't quite keep up hehe

Ho Ho! This is another bug bear of modern motoring. The talentless hordes who can afford the monthly payments on vehicles which they have no hope of driving well.

I get this sort of irritation more in the C36 than the 129, but both are capable of dispatching most when the mood takes me.

There's little to match the sight of a proper gentleman's conveyance at full chat methinks....

Out of curiosity, does anyone have/know if you can get a folding hardtop for the r129 SL or is it a case of a hard top or folding soft top?

eBay doesn't throw much up

I don't know of any car with a retro fit folding hard top. Only possibility I can think of would be an mx5 because later ones can come with either or, but I've no idea if that is doable.

R129 is fixed hardtop or folding softtop.
