The complexity of the mechanism for folding hardtops is significantly more than soft-tops, I'd be surprised if anyone would be brave enough to engineer one.

Yeah, I certainly wasn't expecting an electric one but perhaps some sort of fancy folding one or targa sort of thing.. I was sure I'd seen one years ago but like you say unlikely anyone would go to the effort!

Someone may have built a one off at enormous cost (like the BMW 635 The Oberserver or whatever it was called), but I'd be 99.9% sure a retrofit wouldn't really be feasible. Having seen the roof on one of those SLs and the space it has to fit, it'd have to fold into about a million pieces to fit unless you seriously modified the structure of the car.

I guess it is what it is, and probably perfectly good anyway if you have a soft top and a hard top for it.

I'm now entertaining ideas of buying a second hardtop from eBay and creating a targa type arrangement with a lift off panel.....

Certainly, back in the 70s and 80s there was a flourishing aftermarket glass fibre industry offering all sorts of hardtops for MGBs etc., including targa type ones, but the standard of weatherproofing and wind noise control would have been pretty poor, especially if contrasted with the hush of the MB lid - something I'm probably unable to match in my shed as well!

This 740 looks pretty nice for £1,850. New petrol tank & Continentals; bit of rust on one arch and the boot lid.

I would really like to know this as well, i have a hankering for an E38 but really cant make up my mind what model to get.

728, 730, 735, 740, 750?

Then there is the dilemma of pre or post facelift, what options are desirable, (Comfort seats, EDC, Power trunk and steering reach / rake) etc.

Finally what asking prices are justified and which ones are having a laugh.
