White or Ginger? Opinions please!

My 540i had white indicators all round when I bought it including sides. I didn't think they looked bad against the Ascot Green. In great measure, I think it just depends on the colour of the car as to whether replacing orange indicators with white looks good?

But I've changed them all back to amber now. Here's a snap of the rear mid-way through for comparison. Which do we prefer?

Afternoon all, another lurker here with a thread-type question for Friday pondering. Essentially, we were burgled recently and the gentlemen who visited our house in the dead of night took all our keys, and our recently acquired w212 estate. And crashed it, as we later found out...

Anyway, we were really getting into the s212 but we don't want our actual car back once it's repaired as my wife just doesn't like the idea of it. On the basis that we probably won't get back what we paid and the money spent on servicing and other things (like £400 on tyres and balancing a week prior!) we are looking at s211s, around and just above thread limit. I know they have a bit of a reputation, but I actually really like the look of these cars, and I seem to recall there are a few threadists who have experiences.

From memory, there was a facelift around 2005? I'm probably going to go diesel, as that's what they all seem to be, so how good/reliable are the 280/320 CDIs? There are quite a few with around 150k miles, which doesn't bother me per se, as we only do about 8k per year, but how do they hold up at that stage? The 'sport' versions tend to look quite nice, but I'm not sure about the ride on those big wheels? I guess the answer is to try one!

I'm currently elevating that status of our 18 year old e39 estate from tip-run car to family transport, but I'm not sure management will let us get away with that as our only car for too long!
Sorry to hear about the burglary, what a pain! We have a pre facelift S211, this replaced a discovery 3, which whilst a lovely design was costing £2k per year in repairs of typically poor quality components. Very pleased with the 211 and would recommend one. Despite it being on over 170k miles all it has needed in 18 months of ownership beyond normal consumables has been a front suspension arm/bush, which was inexpensive. Ours is only a 220cdi, but came with a comprehensive history and 7 seats. The 320cdi is I believe well proven and appears a great balance of performance and economy, I know less about the 280.

That is lovely. Perfect colour and condition. My only additional wish would be black leather. If you happen to get another let me know. I'd be tempted to snap it up.

Some nice older Mercedes coming up at SWVA's auction in Poole shortly. My favourite is this 500 SEL on 99k miles, MoT to Oct, looking good for 35 years old! Guide is 2-3k, I suspect it will go for around 3-4k?

We have an S211 and a CLS, both 320 CDI with a total of 217k miles, all but 43k in the E done by us. Both cars have had inlet port shutdown motors (they all do - it gets damaged by oil leaking from the inlet tract immediately above the V where the inlet manifold sits) but otherwise no issues with engines which feel like they will go on for ever. I doubt I have used more than 3 litres of oil between services on both cars in all those miles. Early V6 engines had issues with breaking up of the exhaust manifolds destroying turbos, but if it was going to happen it would have by now. Build quality on both cars is good, with a complete absence of rattles and squeaks.

Both cars have had broken springs (5 on the CLS!). The E is a Sport (18" wheels) and does ride more firmly than the CLS on 17" wheels, and rides better when laden than empty, but it's not uncomfortable in my view. Ref Lowtimer's comments above re suspension refreshes, I have completely replaced the front suspension on the CLS (114k miles) and the contrast with the E (103k miles) is such that a. it's definitely worthwhile and b. the E is next.

Still a long way to go on this car yet though although I feel I made a little progress today. But I'm already worried that I may not get this finished by the end of the year now. frown

But the interior is as perfect as possible really...and leather! (although personally I prefer cloth.)

Can I also make a confession. I rather like the Z3 2.8. I suppose it is cramped, noisy and close to useless for my once a week trip around the M25 (where I would like comfort and quiet). But still, they have a certain something.

Looks great Derin. Although I have a black leather fetish which isn't going away. I'd even prefer black or deep grey fabric to light leather. I just like my cars dark and moody inside, like a cosy man cave.

A doctor mate of mine had the 1.9 when new. Took me out for a spin in it to cheer me up as I'd ended up stuck at my parent's place for a couple of weeks leg-in-plaster following an apres ski injury.

He span it coming off a roundabout on the Leeds ring-road and wrapped it round a tree. We were ok, but it was a pain trying to get the crutches out of the mangled boot. The ambulance men were very surprised to see an accident victim reported to them as having a broken leg already having it in a pot.

I think they look nice enough, though the squat M Roadster is slightly better looking to my eye. I've just always had it in the back of my mind - was it a hard car to control or was my mate a dodgy driver? He then replaced it with a 2.8 - so little doubt in his own mind i think!

This is a comedy question, isn't it? I mean, we're not supposed to answer it, are we? Like clear or amber is a choice? Surely the question is like that a Defendant hears from the dock as the Judge asks the jury foreman, "How do you find, guilty or not guilty?"

FFS

Can you see them when you're wafting? Are they in your sightline when you barge past the poor people?

What on earth do you want to concern yourself with that - there's still fossil fuel at under £20 per glorious English pint and the roads are still open.

Your perspective needs readjusting

PS - it's a BMW, they're all optional anyway.... hehe

Off topic, but does anyone know of any other cars that had 'reverse' seat belts like the e32/e34?

Its something I remember about my E34 that I've never seen it on anything else.

For originality there's no contest obviously and on the front again there's no contest. But, on the rear I do have to admit (with no small degree of shame) that I did have a sneaking liking for the white ones.
"Brings it more bang up to date, innit." biggrin
