Mercedes W124 E280E Auto 64,500 mls.

Looks in fantastic clean condition. The price reflects this but thought someone might want a go.

mtsv gets some really nice stock and he has a good reputation.

You'd really have to want a saloon (sorry to the 4-door lovers) to pay nearly 6 grand for one though.
True, but buy a 2 grand one and see how much it takes to get into this condition. I saw it when I was picking up my 190d, it's truly immaculate.

Bentley Turbo R

Always wanted to have one of these but the thoughts of the upkeep always put me off.

That and trying to keep it running on fuel.

Amazing car anyway if anyone has forgotten to take their medication smile

OMG. Love that. I wonder how much trouble I'd be in if that arrived here.

Not sure about the incontinence seats though.

I quite liked the £2K Lexus GS300 but was a bit confused that it had had oxygen sensors replaced for bank 1 and bank 2, where it's a straight six and I associate 'bank' with each arm of a Vee.

Shame about the missing the headlamp washer cap and nozzle on the OS that would have to be colour matched.

V V true! By the time my E320 is on the road after new springs & wiring loom, plus 4 tyres - and without even touching the non-functioning aircon - I'm sure it'll be well past £5k, and I'm sure it's not a patch on that 280.

I know it's easy to say this as I'll not be asked to put my £ where my mouth is, but I would pay £6k for that. I completely understand that it's not 'worth it' to 99% of people, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth it to someone. As proven by the fact that Mark never seems to have any trouble shifting his cars, quite often they are sold before they even graduate from the 'coming soon' to the 'showroom' page of his site.

I'd love him to give me a tutorial on how he gets his engine bays in that condition; I'm a sucker for a really spotless engine bay.

And I agree, I too would easily pay that for that car (if I was in the market) and know that all the hard work had been done and all I'd have to do is pretty much enjoy it and keep it nice...which are the easy things to do.

Mate is paying £600 pm on a lease on some fancy spec a4. That w124 is 10 months payments.

On another note this 190 seems cheap.....

I'm not sure 'bank' is quite the right term, but I don't think it is unusual to have two 'sets-of-three' exhausts for an S6.

I don't know if that's the case on the GS300 though.

That's so true and a very good way of looking at things by comparison. And to that I would add that after 10 months that the w124 would still be 'yours', probably still worth £6000 (if not more...because good ones aren't getting cheaper); whilst your mate's £6000 spent on the lease plan car will be 'gone' i.e. effectively "dead money". So it's a double whammy!

My father recently passed away from liver cancer, however as a last purchase (on my mothers birthday no less!) He bought himself a 1989 Bentley Turbo R. Unfortunately as I am doing over 80 miles a day the fuel cost would bankrupt me, so sadly it's just sat on the drive. Posting here as one of you brave souls should be driving this as a daily, the ultimate barge.

A cat C I believe (or possibly D?) It has at some point had bodywork damage to the passenger side that has been repaired, from what I can work out mainly the passenger door. Bad points are: a not so perfect paintjob from when it was repaired, although as the car is black it is not hugely noticeable. A pretty much bald tyre. The rev counter intermittently decides not to work. Passenger door doesn't open from outside (going to have a look at this). Passenger electric seat unit doesn't work - battery has leaked on the board - drivers seat works perfectly however! No history, at all, although the kick plates are from Broughtons
In Chelsea so was obviously serviced there at some point ( likely from when it lived in Kensington).

Good points: mechanically appears to be perfect, engine runs sweetly and sounds & drives beautifully. Bodywork looks fine for car of this age, interior in excellent condition.

Novelty points: has its own mobile telephone in the armrest and space for a second. Hilarious performance. Could for a family of four in the boot. Everything is black - all the interior, including the leather headlining, subtle window tints and the trim that is usually wood. If Lucifer had a car!

Has only done around 86k miles, reg is F595 RUC. Posting here to test the water and I believe it would make an excellent barge for somebody here.

There is a point for the lease argument though, and I may get burned for this.....but some people just don't want something that has been farted in by another owner and is 20+ years old, will almost certainly have other issues which will require more frequent trips to the garage to get sorted, worry about rust. They want something that is more quiet, has better brakes and safety features, has nice and chilly working air conditioning, a decent stereo which can be hooked up to their phone, they want consistent payments which makes budeting far easier etc etc. and for that you can't blame them (although £600/month for an A4 is a joke)

And that's before the large but unquantifiable benefit of driving something genuinely (relatively) interesting, which quietly says complimentary things about you, in stark comparison to a new Audi calf Death Star.

That looks like just the stuff Derin. Do you have a few gallons going spare? Can I buy it on Ebay?

Very sorry to hear about your Dad. I'm sure someone here could be interested in the Turbo R. Are you able to post some pictures and indication of how much you would be looking for ?

Fair points of course Ross, and I can see both sides of the argument (not to the tune of £600 pm though).

But I no longer think the comparison of 20 yr old W124/E34/whatever vs brand new leased Audi is as meaningful as it was when this thread and it's progenitor the £5-20k thread were started. Let's face it these are 'classic' cars now; most people run them as an addition to a boring modern daily or as part of a small fleet of similar cars, therefore in my view the more relevant comparison today is between the £2k W124/E34 etc and the £6k one.

Some people enjoy the process of buying a cheaper one and getting it up to scratch, some people's circumstances mean that they can't afford to drop £6k on an old car in 1 go (or they can't get 'permission' to do so) so the staged approach works better for them. But some of us are just too old/lazy and too fed up with all the time and effort and faffing about and just want to pay someone like Mark Taylor to do the sourcing and preparation for them.

(So, in the light of that comment, why on earth do I continue to buy lemons and end up having to throw £ at them to make them half as good as Mark Taylor's cars for 3/4 the cost?? If anyone could explain to me why I keep doing that I'd be genuinely grateful, as would Mrs mccrackenj! Any psychologists on this thread?)
