Yes, I borrowed a (then newish) Audi A4 from a friend a few years ago. It was a 2.0L TDi, hugely competent car, reasonable fast, easy to drive, very frugal but still left me feeling totally uninspired. As a further side-effect, I found myself subconsciously driving like a complete cock ALL of the time! (as opposed to just most of the time in BMWs). I don't know why? I've noticed it having that effect on a lot of other people who drive those particular cars. Gearing?
That's because all those new Audi drivers used to drive BMWs

That's so true and a very good way of looking at things by comparison. And to that I would add that after 10 months that the w124 would still be 'yours', probably still worth £6000 (if not more...because good ones aren't getting cheaper); whilst your mate's £6000 spent on the lease plan car will be 'gone' i.e. effectively "dead money". So it's a double whammy!
There is a point for the lease argument though, and I may get burned for this.....but some people just don't want something that has been farted in by another owner and is 20+ years old, will almost certainly have other issues which will require more frequent trips to the garage to get sorted, worry about rust. They want something that is more quiet, has better brakes and safety features, has nice and chilly working air conditioning, a decent stereo which can be hooked up to their phone, they want consistent payments which makes budeting far easier etc etc. and for that you can't blame them (although £600/month for an A4 is a joke)
You're right, Ross...and those people are actually by far in the majority, I think. But they do have to pay a lot for the privilege. biggrin
I'm another barge>lease convert having done nigh-on 30k miles in my last year of V8 ownership and sadly realising something had to give.

Sold my 550i and am now in a Passat Alltrack at all of 120 a month all in. OK, the car has a 190bhp 4 pot diesel so it's no uber refined naturally aspirated petrol E38/E60, however in literally every other way the car has the E61 beat. And I do include handling in that.

Can get some better pictures later, as for how much (another key piece of info I forgot!) In the region of £6k?
That's a much nicer colour than the red one.
Reasonable MoT history, too.

Do you have any service history for it?

If only... Unfortunately there is zero history with it. Going to contact broughtons at some point to see if they hold any

Looks in fantastic clean condition. The price reflects this but thought someone might want a go.

mtsv gets some really nice stock and he has a good reputation.

You'd really have to want a saloon (sorry to the 4-door lovers) to pay nearly 6 grand for one though.
True, but buy a 2 grand one and see how much it takes to get into this condition. I saw it when I was picking up my 190d, it's truly immaculate.
V V true! By the time my E320 is on the road after new springs & wiring loom, plus 4 tyres - and without even touching the non-functioning aircon - I'm sure it'll be well past £5k, and I'm sure it's not a patch on that 280.

I know it's easy to say this as I'll not be asked to put my £ where my mouth is, but I would pay £6k for that. I completely understand that it's not 'worth it' to 99% of people, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth it to someone.
For the avoidance of all doubt, my point was that you'd really have to want a saloon to pay 6 grand. For an estate in that condition, or a coupe, I'd be first in the queue, but not for a 4-door.

I'm no stranger to the 'buy right' school, and always aim to do that myself, but there's no getting away from the fact that 6 thousand pounds, for what most people will view as a boring variant of an old car, puts it into very niche territory.

Where are you located?

Regarding pricing, take a look at this: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

How does it compare?

If I may ask, what did you sell it for? Do you miss the 550i? As you're aware, I'm half-heartedly selling my 745i at the moment. Every time I drive it I think I should keep it, every time I fill it up I think that could be money put towards my house deposit etc....

There's no way running a cheap V8 barge is cheaper than some cheap lease deals. Totally different I know but a mate is leasing an MX5 for well under £200 per month and that includes all servicing and even tyres.....so it's just put petrol in it and pay <£200/month to run what was a brand new car for 3 years.

Although not a barge, you can apparently lease/rent a Pug 208 gti sport thingy for £89 a month. Very highly regarded by Evo magazine. That seems like a decent price for a fun car.

Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. V5 is currently with DVLA getting owner changed to my mother which is part of the reason its not been for sale sooner.
To compare, well that one has history! Quite surprised how low that one is, in my research something with no issues and history is closer to £10k. Obviously this car isn't perfect and has the issues described, but it's not worth a quarter of that either .
Just got off the phone to Broughtons (Cheltenham not Chelsea) and they have servicing records between 2003 and 2012 which they're sending through now.

Edit: records between 2000 and 2012 receipts totalling £18,927

I see your point, but what you're forgetting to mention is the 2 or 3 grand deposit he put up front.
Leasers are quick to quote monthly DD, and making no mention of the large deposit and the fact you never have a car at the end of the deal.
I don't mind how people fund their cars, but I think more effort should be made to give an 100% accurate comparison.

Deposit was 3 months, so under £600 IIRC

My deposit was 360 quid. 3 months up front. I'm in for 3.4k in total for two years motoring. All my figures include vat btw.

I had mine up for 9.5k Ross and got nearly all of that inside of a week. Which was depreciation of just under 4k for 3.5 years and 65k miles of motoring.

That Passat deal was unreal.
I remember posting when someone first put it up, before everyone jumped on the bandwagon, and I said I couldn't believe it was so cheap.

Not really if you jump on the right deal at the right time. Hence why I've got a nice 640d. It's a million miles better than my old E38 740i in every way. I do love barges but they are more a hobby than a serious proposition for most people and I certainly wouldn't look down my nose at someone for preferring to run a brand new A4 as a daily over an Audi 80 smile

Only 49,000 miles. Could be a steel but bidding popular.

It has been upgraded or should we say tuned using hybrid power.
