Some cracking thread purchases recently guys, although I don't post much I do read this thread daily!

Just thought I'd update you all on the 24v. After a couple of weeks off the road after the poor running returned I decided to splash out on the obvious causes first, so a new distributor cap and rotor arm were ordered from Mercedes and fitted buy my friendly indi for £20..............and now she's back to running perfectly, so hopefully that's the end of that. However now I'm using it it has highlighted i really do need to get the auto trans fluid changed as she like holding onto gears.

I'm also likely to loose my other garage in the coming months so hopefully i'll be able to sort something out otherwise I may be forced to let her go, which I really don't want to!

Any way have a picture just to prove it does work!

What a nice looking old thing. I bet the extra power of the 24v engine is very pleasant compared to my 300e.

2004 VOLKSWAGEN PHAETON V10 Diesel 4 Motion (4WD) 5 litre

Only 49,000 miles. Could be a steel but bidding popular.

It has been upgraded or should we say tuned using hybrid power.

I was interested in that right up until I saw those exhaust pipes.
Glad I wasn't the only one!

I wonder what this is like in the metal. S500, I like the colour and the little wheels which will make it even more comfortable, soft close, 73k miles and £2,600.

Well this should work but all I get is a little box without a picture.

Should have bought a Windows instead of being a tight git biggrin

I read this thread more dutifully than I read the daily papers.

It's like a combination of leaving through the old, paper (black and white) Auto Trader and reading a constantly evolving novel that has the potential to suck you in as one of the characters.

I love this thread, and all its volumes. smile

Also, in other news, I am now officially the WORST at selling E39 BMWs...

I bought my 530 Sport Touring off here last November, initially as a winter lugger, then I realised it was too nice to work hard and thought I better sell it and get another old Jeep to abuse and dent. After all, the 530 boasts a fantastic history, an entire new cooling system and a recon gearbox - it's just in fantastic shape, when I viewed it it was immaculately valeted and wearing new Continentals all around.

So... I MOT'd the 530 yesterday...

It failed...

On a wiper blade and a slightly perished tyre valve...hehe

All fixed up for pence and back on the road.

Its done 160,000+ miles now and been absolutely brilliant. It's brisk, comfortable, spacious and a really lovely way to eat up the miles. I've done 500 mile London trips loaded to the hilt on several occasions and it never fails to please.

If I was to be majorly critical, I would say that I still slightly miss my old E320 CDi Estate for the fact it was almost as swift... even more capacious AND... incredibly, a constant 45mpg, where the 530 is more of a 25mpg kinda beast. But then, this is because the straight six snarl is delicious and for a big old estate it really picks up and rattles along.

So... here I am, nine months later and still not putting very much effort into the sale. hehe

Couple of pics from the original ad:

I honestly think I NEED to find a 540 in better condition (or an M5) to prise this one away from myself.

Good: 2.6, 77k miles, air con, leather

Bad: needs ambers, air con doesn't currently work, spoiler.

In the next few weeks I should have a mighty but unexpected £1100 burning a hole in my pocket. Which has shed-shaped barge potential.

There's a 3.0 awd X-type around the corner from me with 77k and a fsh apparently. I've not seen one on here thanks to the XJ (I assume), with even the S-type getting a poor response thanks to the engines carrying over to the bigger car, but an XJ for this money will be junk. Is the little Jag that bad?

I had one as a courtesy car for a while. It was in a very poor state so I'm not sure if it was representative of all of them, but the motor was far noisier than in the XJ, the economy was worse, and the interior felt poorly put together. On the plus side, it was comfortable and handled noticeably better than the XJ I had at the time.

New barge purchase inspired by Woodys cracking looking E39.

After having 3 E38 750 i's and 4 E39's on the trot all with the straight sixes of various sizes and all with the m-sport package I found a rather rough but very cheap '99 pre-facelift non exterior M-sport 540. 2 owner car, imported to Sweden as a yahreswagen from Germany, and one owner for 15 years and after that the guy I bought it from. Last owner had it just under a year and haven't really lavished the car if I'm honest, but the oil and filters were recently changed as were the valve cover gaskets, water pump, brakes and pads all around, new rear calipers, pretty much every suspension component bar the struts and springs have been changed in the last few years so it feels tight as a drum and rides very quiet. etc.

Good points. Nice colour combo of orient blue over heated black leather sport seats. M-Sport suspension and steering wheel, very high spec in general, nav, electric sunblind, side blinds, dual pane glass, glass sunshine roof, telephone on a cord biggrin etc Interor in rather good nick, and it even has the non-foldable rear seat which is actually comfy. Engine is quiet and pulls strongly, I reckon this is just as rapid as my 750's were and the gearbox is smooth up and down through the gears, but sometimes with a little un-tidy downshift to 1st, but pretty much all my automatic BMW's have done that, so I'll leave it be.

Bad points, and If I'm honest they are a few.. No, and I mean zero service history, AC needed a re-gas and got one only to find a small leak, so that has to be adressed same as the MOT advisory of a slight oil leak from the engine. Rusty rear arches, some rust on the sills behind the front wheels, one headlight looks like it's been thru a meteor shower and the other one is brand new, and the paint on the hood is bad and the rest of the car would mind a serious cut and polish, but some slight rust repair and it will look presentalble. Sits on 16" style 48's on very good but still all season tyres in the wrong dimension 205/60-16 so I'm looking for a set of staggered 32's or 5's.

So this is what a very high spec very tatty sub £1200 looks like. (Sellers pic I might add)

Well played! *Goes to buy M5, looks at bank account, then concedes defeat*

Will look awesome on some new wheels and a polish. I almost went for a 540iT with a few issues, but I couldn't resist the little 528.

I'mr really enjoying my E39 experience so far, feels so much more modern than the W124 , which is nice for a change, but I'm sure I'll hanker after something with a little more character at some point.

Even made my first purchase for it: A new external case for the key since the buttons have started to fall apart on mine. £2.99 delivered brand new. Not bad.
