Had the transmission (5spd) serviced on the S211 early last week - the day after it suddenly started intemittently whining at low speeds around town. Oh dear I thought. Since then I've been driving it and not heard a peep. Anyone else experienced this or know what the hell could have happened?

I'm half tempted to get the levels re-checked to be sure. It feels spot on.
Until I did one myself, I hadn't realised just how much of a faff getting the level correct was - I'm sure specialist garages know precisely how much fluid to add, but I spent ages getting it bang on 80 deg., topping up and running though the gears to get it spot on. No noise whatsoever when driven, so certainly worth checking levels in case they fell short - horrible coincidence if something else. I bought a dip-stick from Amazon, about 20% of the MB article's price.

Think I once read that the fluid is removed and replaced under pressure as the torque converter holds a good proportion of the fluid. Maybe just a bit of an air lock that sorted itself out?

Nice.

Reliability concerns are for boring people who buy Lexi instead.

Under £2k. Sounds like an utter bargain.

On at a fiver under £9K.

Serious question - when the next periodic volume reboot comes around shall we abandon this £1-£5K thing and make it something higher, like "four-figure barges"? No-one seems to consider £5K a worthwhile price limit any more.

That's just Autotrader talking bks.

Pre-March '06 so it'll be £290 or so.
Even if it was £505, that's less than £10 per week, make your sandwich rather than buying.
How much can one save by not buying a daily paper?

I'd be up for that. Thoughts from others?

Whilst not massive in the grand scheme of things, if it's an extra £300 per year that's not to be sniffed at. Especially if you already make your own sandwiches and read the paper online. But likewise, it shouldn't put you off buying it if it's what you want.

I like buying and selling from PHers as well. Generally much easier and it's nice to meet another barge enthusiast!
Reckon this is the way forward. We need a thread 'swapshop'. biggrin

I'll kick off with a R129 500SL, I need a barge, tow car or hot hatch in exchange.

I'd support that, but last time it was raised (the idea, not the upper limit) there was a lynch mob gathering at the suggestion!

I postulated that idea earlier but was received negatively.

For me, the five grand limit is more psychological than financial. It's always felt like a nice ceiling to me, and I'm not sure there's much of a reason to change it.

But wtf do I know?!

I've always regarded the thread limit as an elastic one, but I do see merit in keeping clear blue water between this thread and the unloved 5-20 one.

Perhaps the other thread can be a 10k+ one - a £6k barge is more ours than the other thread, £25k is a lot of money after all!

I'd agree that the 1-5k thread has an elastic limit, both in terms of the definition of barge and in terms of the £1k and £5k lower and upper limits.
