Even if it was £505, that's less than £10 per week, make your sandwich rather than buying.
How much can one save by not buying a daily paper?
Depends how many cars you have, really. If I had just one then finding £505 would not seem too terrible, but with four cars it potentially starts to get serious, which is why three of mine are before the cut-off date and one is a super-cheapy.

I like buying and selling from PHers as well. Generally much easier and it's nice to meet another barge enthusiast!
Reckon this is the way forward. We need a thread 'swapshop'. biggrin

I'll kick off with a R129 500SL, I need a barge, tow car or hot hatch in exchange.
Yep, I got my c32 from a threadist and jolly good it is too - no MOT advisories last month!

I would love a 500SL as my father had use of one when they first came into the UK and I fell in love with it. However, a 'sensible' Estate is a bit more useful with 2 kids!

On at a fiver under £9K.

Serious question - when the next periodic volume reboot comes around shall we abandon this £1-£5K thing and make it something higher, like "four-figure barges"? No-one seems to consider £5K a worthwhile price limit any more.
I'd be up for that. Thoughts from others?
I couldn't disagree more smile

Der started this thread way back when and its remit has always been about unearthing motors which were once the preserve of industry captains, but are now relative pocket change for the cunning bargist.

Up the budget any more, and we're talking significant investment... Which is what the £5-20k Barge thread is for.

In my humble opinion.

When this has come up previously, I have always been of the same opinion to you. I think it's just that I'm looking at cars above thread value now and don't want to leave smile

1-5k means a £4k premium from low to high, £1-£10k means a £9k premium - much larger.

Other opinions please! It's healthy to have this debate from time to time.

Rather than change the threads we've got, we could perhaps start a complementary 5-10 one?

If anything I could argue it ought to go the other way.

I think the limits are more of a suggestion and an indication of the thread MO which involves buying magnificent cars at ridiculous prices.

I think part of the reason that the 5-20 thread is pretty dead, is that it's not vey fun. You have to be rather more sensible with your £10k purchases than £2k ones and there becomes less room for the odd and unusual choices.

I would imagine very well. I remember driving it back from Dover one Sunday evening, perfect for such a trip!

I'd prefer to stick with 1-5 with a bit of elasticity and haggle room.

Up to ten bags and you lose the "champagne motoring on lemonade budget" thread ethos that, to me in any case, makes barging attractive in the first place.

The Alpina badge would have to go and perhaps some choice engine mods to accompany the look, but otherwise this is a stunner.

Thread limit is thread limit,

Unless you see something you think other threadists will like.

(Which basically means, post it if you don't think you'll be tutted at, but not just by default. I think that's how a lot of 5.5-5.9ker's get away without being shouted down).

Wow. It will last forever. The door chunk on these old a4s is still pre VW in quality. Bloody expensive though!

Bet they gave the original owner about £500 for that.

Agreed... There's something interesting about it having done only 10% of its life though...

Random one in case you didn't know for non Autotrader purchases-

How to find out if a car is Cat D or C without paying (if the advert doesn't say, eg scumtree or similar).

Get the reg, go to autotrader, start an ad. Put in the reg, if on V Car, it tells you. All before you need to pay of course, and can give bargaining power (or a reason to avoid picking up the 'phone if you are so inclined).

Amazing how much better they look in dark colours
"relisted due to a timewaster" : It's a shed.
It's usually the seller who's the "timewaster", an unusual car might be 300 miles away so some questions and based on the description you make a bid, when you get there, it's nothing like the description.

I went to see an alfa 166 about 10 years ago, I specifically asked about body damage, none at all, I was that convinced I was driving home in it i'd insured it and gone on the train, when I got there there was a whacking great dent in the back door, what the fk is that, I thought we could negotiate on the price, fk off
