Did I see that price right? If it lasts a year that's a fine way of mooching about anonymously. Tempting, but I'm sticking to browsing for LS400s and R129 SLs for now.

Ross, will you be changing your username to E120Ross..?

Also, has anyone got the link for the barge meet? Sadly I must withdraw - I really want to be there, but standing in a car park admiring barges is not considered adequate a reason to miss my nephew's 1st birthday.

I can report back that the 745i was faultless on the 450mile drive home. Averaged around 33mpg which is pretty good. Drives nice and smooth and has plenty of poke.

Thanks again Ross for an easy transaction the car was exactly as described and I am very happy thumbup
33mpg???? That's 25% better than my 3.0 Merc does on a long journey!

I passed a random little garage in a small village which was deserted today. In the showroom they had a w124 estate in smoke silver, a later diesel by the grill in the wing. It was the only car inside and was quite dusty. No price on it and I didn't get a photo, I probably should have though.

Thread limit change seems to be deeply unpopular!

Why would inflation only affect the ceiling and not the floor as well??

Pootling about in the 190 today, it really is perfect for these kind of roads and this weather.

I also found myself having a bit of a 190e day yesterday. I had to run an errand (euphemism for "buy toilet roll") and rather than use the local convenience store 500 yards away, went on a 25 mile jolly. Tried to find a nice photo op and nearly failed - until right outside my local church I found this longboat.

Post "complete rebuild" - the engine seems to be getting better and better. Is that a thing, or just just in my mind? Certainly it's pulling really well (particularly strongly above 4000 rpm) and a good drive did wonders to build my confidence in it.

The MOT is due now really, and I've got two new sills on the way to make a good job of it. It needs a ball joint and, unless an oil change helps, probably a differential pinion bearing.

The first year of ownership has been, err, attritional. But a well sorted 190e is a lovely thing - greater than its sum of modest parts.[url][url]

Regarding thread budget - Is it just me, or do cars not seem to drop value in the final third like they used to?

In the past it would seem that most cars would continue to free fall in price into thread budget, languish for a few years and then maybe start gaining value when the numbers of good examples start to drop. It seems now values seem to firm up way before they get anywhere near thread budget.

For example I can accept that the days of picking up E24 6 Series or E34 M5s for under five grand are long gone, but where are the cars that were supposed to replace them? Thread budget wouldn't get you into anything but the the dregs of the E63 6 Series market and tidy e60 M5 prices have been static at ~15k for years, and its been that way for at least a couple of years. It seems that many of cars I've had my eye on have just stopped losing value, when traditionally you'd expect them to keep on falling.

Perhaps it was just tucked away for future use? My choice of garage has an entire showroom full of interesting metal, none of which is for sale and most seem not to move.

190Es both looking lovely. thumbup

Bi Turbo S600 needing a bit of work for less than thread budget

Alot of barge business sellers not confident in their product recently.

"The car is sold as spares or repairs / parts as there is no warranty implied or given as advised by Trading Standards."
In my experience it rarely reflects badly on the car unless it's advertised with a specific fault. It's just a way to get around the '3 month warranty' side of things that all dealers have to provide these days.

I bought an Integra type R, hit the dealer with a low offer. Said you can have it at the lower price but I'll sell it spares or repair. Car was fine
Ohhhhhhh i like that. Haven't bought a bucket of brave pills though

This may not be the right thread to ask this question, but I know I'll get totally unbiased answers here wink

Liking my E39 'loon again since fixing the ABS module (which was losing cruise as well as ABS and DSC when it threw errors (most journeys, increasingly) and also messing up the gearbox sometimes) but the amount of stuff I've been taking down the tip recently reminds me how much I miss having an estate...

... but rather than looking for a big bargey estate, it occurs to me that I could just buy a trailer and a towbar and then maybe get a more average ("normal" as my better half would say) car when the time comes to change (Golf, Civic, boggo family hatchback basically).

This seems like a very sensible plan and involves driving a much less silly car around rather than always having the extra space to cart about, but still being able to add the load space when needed (ton bags of rubbish, push bikes, etc)... so sensible, I need help reminding why I should actually buy (current leader on the shortlist) a 3.2 or 4.2 A6 Avant instead wink

Had the transmission (5spd) serviced on the S211 early last week - the day after it suddenly started intemittently whining at low speeds around town. Oh dear I thought. Since then I've been driving it and not heard a peep. Anyone else experienced this or know what the hell could have happened?

I'm half tempted to get the levels re-checked to be sure. It feels spot on.
Think I once read that the fluid is removed and replaced under pressure as the torque converter holds a good proportion of the fluid. Maybe just a bit of an air lock that sorted itself out?
Yup no drain plug on the TC so I believe half the old fluid is left in. Still no noise so hopefully the air lock explains it. I'm going to get the level checked at a transmission place this week to be sure. I could even have the fluid changed again so nearly all of it is fresh.

Probably the best idea - depending on how much the torque converter holds you might need to do 3-4 changes to actually change more than 90% of the oil!

I you have room to park a trailer why not just buy another car?
