R129 Mercedes SL 500

43,200 miles

£1,000 when posted but with reserve.

Looks stunning but might go over the budget.

I rather like this one.

Mercedes 560 SEC Convertible

This is way over budget but I can't remember ever seeing one for sale before.

Do not think the car looks great with the soft top but this is my personal view.

Thoughts??

I really, really struggle to fault the CLS estate following our eurotrip - a trip I've done in a few vintages of MB now. I understand some of the derision of the new, but it really was perfect for the trip. 3,185 miles in a little over 2 weeks. I fail to see any measure by which an older car could be better for that type of trip. And I own both old and new.
I don't care for the aggressive and over-adorned styling of modern cars, especially UK market Mercs. They're also lacking in specialness, being essentially mass-market products: it seems like everyone's got one, these days, and they're all the same. The colours are dull. And they lack two decades of stories to tell. I don't doubt that for any given journey they are superior in many ways. Until you get a puncture. But to own and to love? Nah.
I hear you on the "everyone's got one" point but I'm pretty sure Most models are available as SE spec cars with small wheels and in jobby brown. And if I got a puncture I'd have whacked the spare wheel on. I'll continue to do my 800mile days in the new car and get my old kicks from sitting in the 129 in the garage (hasn't turned a wheel since March. Terrible form) hehe

SMS'd this link to a chum of mine this morning. He's collecting it tomorrow. Owner certainly seems to be the right sort.

I just bought one of these in silver with blue leather. As the ad says, the v8 sound is addictive and with about 225bhp they are not particularly slow. Mine is definitely the epitome of a smoker barge though!
Very nice choice. Looks amazing.

Any issues with the car so far?
Oh, plenty of issues I imagine - I think it will at least need some rust attending too in numerous places. There is a scary number of invoices in the lever arch file that came with the car. But for now nothing that stops me driving it, and enjoying the chat with the various people who stop to look at it in car parks.

The back story is that it was my wedding car five years ago. i liked the car and knocked on the owner's door to see if he'd drive me and my usher and best man to the big day, which he did. I always said i'd like to buy the car if it was ever for sale, and as the owner sadly passed away a few months ago, I got the opportunity. Not great circumstances, but the owner's son was pleased it went to someone with a connection to the car.

Saw this in one of the classic car monthlies yesterday

Nostalgic.

Seems funny to think nowadays that, for more than likely a good proportion of us, the car browsing fix only came but once a week by leafing through blurred black and white photos the size of your thumb, printed on bog roll that turned your hands black, at around 8am every given Thursday morning.
Took a few pics of some old adverts earlier...

Apologies for the poor quality photos.

If you want a 240 wagon that's probably the one. Nice velour.

Makes me feel a little better about the £617 bill on my 540 tourer I paid this morning. (It was only £625 for the whole car)

Did you just buy a Rolls Royce and nobody took any notice?

Crikey, those 190E's must be really good.

Given he plasters a nice E39 with ///M badges I beg to differ.

I can't wait to see CDG turning up chauffeur driven in the back of this for the next barge meet (requiring months of servitude in return for Mrs CDG).

You'll know that BMW are far more guilty of this if you've visited a Dealer recently, but peel them off (and replace the RFT's) and you still might find the occasional good car underneath.

I am home from collecting the Retro Rides 190E LE. 150 miles, just over 1/4 of a tank, 75mph all the way, ~3500rpm as we know. Impressed really!

Now, the coolant temp never went above 80 and usually sat at 75 - is this normal?

Looking forward to tinkering over the weekend.
The auto boxes are only 4 speed so the engine is buzzing at motorway speeds. The 5 speed manual is doing just 2700 (from memory) at 70.

As for temperature? It depends what thermostat it has in there. From memory there are 2 options: 79 and 82. Mine is new...it's 82... and it sits just above the 80 mark as you'd expect. Get stuck in traffic and it will raise towards the middle of the guage. It's worth doing this on the driveway just to make sure your fan kicks in to cool things off - they can wear.

Enjoy!

I didn't know about the spare. That makes a big difference (not sarcasm). It's a CLS break, no? Even I in my most bitter and cynical mode would have to concede that is a rather nice car. I wonder how your Pagoda would have coped?!

The spec thing is weird these days. All CLSs are AMG-line now; in the other ranges, only the little engines are available in SE trim and then only with restricted options and interior colours.
