BMW X5 3.0i

97,936 miles

£3,100.

Not the more desirable diesel and also a manual but a good price smile

Wasn't this voted as the LEAST reliable BMW in recent years? At that age it's ripe for suspension, gearbox and engine woes. Haggle hard! Look on BMW forums for info. Mate has a 4.4v8 and he spent more than the purchase price in the first year keeping it on the road. Always something electrical going wrong, and suspension parts seemed to be made of butter given how long they lasted. Then he had to get a £2500 recon gearbox for it, and his had only done around 70k miles from memory.
I've driven the auto version of this many moons ago. Thought it was very slow and not very economical. Given the poor economy you'd have been as well going for one of the V8's.

Being a manual, it might make it slightly better. Doubt it though.

My smoker barge (2003 XJ6) passed it's first MOT in my care the other day. Advisories on brake flexi line ferrules being corroded, easily fixed and will get the garage to do at the next service.

So, 1 year and 10k miles (which is double the miles I thought I'd do) it's cost:

£4500 purchase price
£99 Service at a local Jag specialist
£249 insurance
plus fuel.

So a year's trouble-free motoring for under the theoretical thread limit. I'd intended to sell on and buy another barge after the first year but I can't help feeling that I'd struggle to find anything as good (FJSH, one owner, no expense spared including £3700 on a gearbox 20k miles ago) so it stays.

Just spoke with the vendor who did not sound very Crawley so a plus point at the start.

It sounds like an alright car and will come with a new MOT. What I need to establish next is if the marks / dents are parking scuffs or if they are all rust spots. There is some rust visible in the pics around the rear bumper and the massive section of paint that is missing.

Anyone got a checklist for the W220? I know mainly rust but where are the hidden hotspots? Next step is I am going to get a friend to go and have a look since it turns out he lives very close to the vendor.

If you like green, but only when it almost looks like they aren't green then this is the car for you. 540i tourings appeal even more now I've had a taste of E39ing.

It has the metal lid, which is why it surprised me it seems to need a new stat! I will add it to the list.

Also, the headlight throw switch 'hisses' when you move it quickly - normal?

Lastly, the boot doesn't seem to lock off the C/L which is slow on the doors too.
Headlight switch normal I think.

Central locking not. Likely disconnected at the boot and leaking air. New element should be cheap. Remove boot trim and investigate!
Just whatever you do - don't jump in two footed on the central locking...I chipped £200 from the seller of mine for non functioning central locking on a door. He gladly obliged. After a couple of days it started working and has ever since. Either something was stuck and freed itself or the battery needed a bit of a charge courtesy of the alternator.

Hope you're enjoying the car... It really looks smashing.
I think the boot was just operating independently of the doors, they seem to be re-synced now!

These are rare now.

My father had the saloon and I found it a poor drive and not very sharp.

Just did not feel as special as it should have.

Can we knock it of with the 'when posted' disclaimer on auction posts. The last several pages have been littered with cars that are obviously going to go for above the thread limit but were cheap 'when posted'. I realise that my complaint will make sure that XKR goes for £4999 but I think the point stands.

Ben

p.s. not singling out you ELUSIVEJIM, I think there have been other offenders. Unless it is just you, in which case I am singling you out. Sorry.

Worries me when an advert is poorly checked before posting.

It concerns me when someone is selling car like that and has a house like that, yet types in ALL CAPS like a 18yr old selling his clapped out badly modded corsa active.

I would never like to comment on anyone spelling badly as people can have Dyslexia which is not their fault.

But this advert as you have stated just does not seem to be right. Just a bit fishy.

Saying that some extremely successful businessmen like Sir Richard Branson are dyslexic so you just never know.

It's not dyslexia, it's either technophobia or (and I'd say more likely) idiocy.

Not many sensible people would write an ad like that.

I just glanced on Autotrader and noticed that we will soon be welcoming a new entry to the 1-5k barge thread.

The Jaguar XF is getting very close. I'll post a link to a couple tomorrow. Yes, they've done a high mileage but to my mind they look a lot of car for the money.

What do others think?

Totally get your point but I have bought cars off eBay for thousands less than book price due to the cars having larger engines.

Most of the public now are after cars which will have smaller engines and would run a mile if you mentioned an engine above 1.4.

Also PCP's are so popular many of these cars are not wanted.

The Jaguar XKR could be totally different "never purchased one nor looked at prices" but I just wanted others to see what is out there.

Please feel free for anyone else wanting me not to post cars like this and I will just keep them to myself.

Obviously I will post cars which will have no chance of going near or over £5,000.

Cheers
I think perhaps a little more filter is required is all - some of the cars are blatantly going to be 10k+, and although it's nice to ogle them briefly, it's not really thread remit. An occasional non-barge has crept in too. biggrin

Right will start filtering better.

I have seen a few coupe's in the past so thought if it was a large one it would be fine.

I will only post barges and cars which I know will be under 5k smile

Am I allowed a last request?

I'm sure with a haggle this could get very close if not below thread budget.

5k + haggle of course.

Please don't take it personally, I wouldn't want to discourage someone from enthusiastically trawling for our fare.
