Would need a haggle to get below £5k.

What do people think of these? Rubbish or a barge of the future

100% worthy of this thread..

I had one and really liked it.

Firstly, it's huge particularly inside. I'm 6ft 5 and never needed the seat fully back and still loads of headroom.

Awesome HiFi, mine had the Boston Acoustics upgrade.

Lively performance and 35MPG overall. It got through a lot of tyres and wasn't particularly reliable. Quiet once it was at cruising speed.

Rover SD1 was 4727x1768x1385mm (LxWxH), the current Astra 5-door hatch is 4370x1809x1485mm. Not quite as long but wider and taller.
Note that I did not specify the new Astra, the Astra K, but its predecessor, the 2009-2015 Astra J, which was bigger and heavier. 4419 x 1814 x 1510mm. Very nearly as long as an SD1 - especially in 4698mm estate form - and very significantly wider and taller, so a larger car in terms of volume. Park an SD1 next to an Astra J and it looks like a scale model.

Quite a number of people enjoy the Mercedes SL 129.
I know this is not a barge and has only two seats so is this to be stopped?

Two-seaters are all ineligible except for the paradox that that all non-AMG Merc SLs from the R107 onwards are probably eligible. Padogas probably not. The R107 was designed to drive like a Barge and does. (This is not a criticism at all, as Harry Metcalf's new YouTube video demonstrates). My R129 500SL has pleasingly Bargey qualities. The R230 is Barge Central.

I tend to think the 129 is not a barge BUT it is something to smoke about in, so therefore qualifies.

Diesel lumps seem to have a mixed reception here.

Barge to me also includes the way the car drives so in a way a Diesel is (can be) very much classed as a barge.

Examples:

Not barges

BMW M5
Audi S8
Mercedes E55/63
Volvo T5

Barges

Audi A8 4.2 Diesel
BMW 7 series diesel
Toerag 5.0 V10

And I would include an old Skoda Superb 2.5 (petrol or diesel) as a barge.

I just think that diesel suits a very relaxed driving style and that is barging.

The R129 has many bargelike qualities - quiet, comfort above sportiness, able to cross continents in a single bound and has large petrol engines. That and a general waftiness more often associated with big 4 seater Mercs. Aside from the lack of 4 proper seats they fit quite well.

Old S8s can definitely be a barge... the auto helps here.

We had one for a long time, fabulous thing. Southampton to Lake Konstance in a day.

That fact that no-one will ever agree on this is why I am explaining my personal interpretation only and have no desire to impose on anyone else. I'm still just as likely to turn up to the next bargemeet in my Porsche as anything else.

Clearly a term which different people can use to mean a diesel Skoda and a 100K two-seat V12 convertible is capable of meaning almost anything to anyone.

That looks bloody tempting for when it becomes about 14 years old and in budget!!!

THE RULES OF BARGE

Any other actual or potential Barge categories I should consider?

I would include the category of ´mini-barge´.

I´m always interested by, for example, the BMW E90 automatics that get posted on here from time to time.

Large-capacity 6-cylinder engine, autobox, leather etc. Lovely things that I enjoy coveting. Think a 330i from, say, 2007.

I'm currently preparing my 190e for its MOT test next week. It's booked in with a garage I've started using and have been impressed with so far. They're going to provide me with a fail sheet on Tuesday - then...

1) The friendly welder is going to tickle her underbelly to a high standard.

2) The MOT garage will pass it and do a few jobs for me at the same time.

Can someone help me with some advice?

A) It needs a ball joint as the steering is much heavier one way than the other. The independent specialist who diagnosed this is too far away (and has no courtesty car) to justify the journey. So what should I buy and do I need to do both sides?

B) Which of these do you prefer? I like them both: the plain font is much simpler and in keeping with the car, but the 3D is very much of its time and (IMHO) suits it. I simply can't decide.

Those period plates look great. Who's doing those for you?

I'm sitting in a 330d auto right now, and definitely concur.

My slant on this sub-category would be that it needs to have six cylinders and an auto box. Four pot and Spanish are out.

Lexus LS400

Says 160,000 miles but last MOT in March it was at 160,224 so not moved??

£350.00

Does not look in the best condition and no pictures of the inside but it is cheap.

Perhaps for a reason.

Mine had peeling alloys too.

The main issue with mine was the starter motor and alternator, that was expensive other than that just consumables. Also be aware of the cut off (early 2006) for cheaper road tax.

A little tip, if you can get the upgraded model it includes a sunroof, sat nav and the Boston acoustics hi Fi which is phenomenal.

I recall sitting in the car, normal position and being unable to touch the windscreen, it was that big.

Mine did have the Bentley grille and chrome mirror covers but wasn't too OTT.

Drive one, you will be impressed.
