North. I picked up a double flash doing about 105 so no doubt there's trouble ahead. I thought they were inoperative when the variable limit is off but it appears I may be wrong about that. Although this is quite reassuring: http://www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/sites/default...

I thought I got one doing about that speed (slightly more, I think) in that area about six weeks ago but I haven't had a letter or any contact yet. Maybe I was just lucky?

Good luck with it, anyway
Best of luck with that R129SL, hope you don't get caught, or if you do....that it was under the speed for a ban.

I got caught a few years ago, thought I was doing over 100 and it came through at 94 so just missed out on a court appearance hehe
This appears to have come to nothing, almost three weeks now having passed.

I'm currently preparing my 190e for its MOT test next week. It's booked in with a garage I've started using and have been impressed with so far. They're going to provide me with a fail sheet on Tuesday - then...

1) The friendly welder is going to tickle her underbelly to a high standard.

2) The MOT garage will pass it and do a few jobs for me at the same time.

Can someone help me with some advice?

A) It needs a ball joint as the steering is much heavier one way than the other. The independent specialist who diagnosed this is too far away (and has no courtesty car) to justify the journey. So what should I buy and do I need to do both sides?

B) Which of these do you prefer? I like them both: the plain font is much simpler and in keeping with the car, but the 3D is very much of its time and (IMHO) suits it. I simply can't decide.

A) I have always found that the second one fails within weeks of replacing the first one. It's not an expensive job, so may as well get both done. Euro Car Parts are have a big sale on at the moment (as always), use code "Holiday30" for 30% off. They stock Lemförder ball joints at £20.49, so £14 each. Have you got a tool to remove and replace the ball joints?

B) Top one. Again, who's doing them?

Day trip to creepy Crawley? Enjoy the 'ambience'.
I was looking forward to a thrust report on that car.😥

I was not born in Crawley but lived there from close to birth until I was 18 so am well aware of the delights it has to offer, despite its reputation like anywhere it has its nice bits and I quite like it.

A friend inspected the S600 for me in the week and despite the scruffy body work it had a very very good service history, most recently a £3000 service in April covering coil packs and spark plugs and a full suspension rebuild at £6k about 4 years and not loads of miles ago. I even had a wad of cash with me fully expecting to buy it, lesson learned about deposits I think!

Anyway given this one has gone I am now actively looking for:

W220 S600 biturbo
W221 any engine but must have 'night vision'

I realise the latter is less likely within thread budget, I keep coming back to the broken one a few pages back given I am quite handy it could be a cheap fix.

I will buy two then. Thanks champ.

The plates are DMB Graphics. They are flipping ace at reproductions. Even a photograph of a dealer sticker will come back perfect.

Full dealer sets are about £35 and I think a pair of plates are about £20.

I'll let you know how things go.

I've used DMB graphics in the past. 1st class work.

I'm very tempted by this. Only thing that worries me is no mention of service history and the dent/scratch/rust on the front drivers wing.

Do these suffer from rust?

Think my comment obviously came across wrongly. I worked at 'Gatport Airwick' and Sussex Police for years and that was our nickname for it. I always had a good time there and was thinking I'd have just used the ticket anyway.
How about a supercharged S class?

1990 Starion will not interest many on this thread, but at £3250 it really should!

Ah I see, I had to be back early tomorrow morning so was not really worth the trip much to the disappointment of mother.

I have had the supercharged engine in an SL and don't think it would really suit the S class yet would consider it in an E class.

Utterly irrelevant to the £5k price limit, but the latest Harry's garage reviews the R107 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIeTa-9oLtQ

A great video!

Edit: his description of it as a classic car for non enthusiasts, a convertible saloon, and modern no stress travel for a 70s car perhaps explains why many of us see SLs as barges!

I'm watching Coming to America and King Jaffi Juffur of Zamunda has just arrived in New York in his magnificent cavalcade of three W126 S Classes, all black including his own long wheel base limo in full African despot spec including wing flags.

PS anyone want a 500SL? I'll post you the keys and give you the Google Map reference of a random street in Edinburgh.

It had been standing for ages at my old place so I changed the battery, started it, got it through town to a busy junction where it died and didn't quite have enough to restart. My phone also died as well. A nice chap from ATS saved me by towing it to a safe place.

I really can't be bothered to sort it. The roof needs fixing, I have not been driving it due to this hence the battery/running problem. My boredom threshold is quite low.

Does it matter whether it had new oil on time in 1998 when, 18 years later it's still working perfectly?

It's always reassuring to see the pollen filter getting changed every 2 years but...at this price and stage of life... I'd be reassured by golden oil and an air filter that's cleanish.

Plus if you want some history you can buy a Lexus stamp on eBay for £30.

Buy on condition... What the MOT history demonstrates about the vendor and a bit of instinct

They're not known to rust and parts supply is a doddle.

Let me know when you're finished with it (!)

I'll pop over for it in the morning!

I had mine sitting in the garage over the winter and it ran like a dog after sitting for so long. I think they really need regular use. My money would be on the distributor cap, dampness or dirt or both.

It gave some impressive backfires when it was trying to turn over frown

It was the end of a bad day yesterday and my holiday had just been cancelled to boot. I will get it recovered to a garage I know nearby at some point.

It needs the whole ignition and timing going through and a new exhaust. I was close to getting out of the city confines and giving it a good thrashing as a temporary "fix" as well.

Glad to hear this. I drive that way nearly every day and was similarly flashed, but nothing yet.

Incidentally, my wife was also caught in that jam with our newborn just as it started. 7 hrs. To travel 5 junctions.

The joys of running a fleet of older cars, can be trying at times. I have a good exhaust guy through here if you need a recommendation. What's up with the roof?
