BMW 4.8 is

84,500 miles

£5,999

Need to batter a deal but with the big engine it is possible to get for 5k

https://www.gumtree.com/p/bmw/2005-bmw-x5-4.8-is-s...

One of these was in front of me the other day, pulling out from a junction it sounded fantastic. Would imagine it could make my e55 look economical though!

I think this looks rather smart. 0-60 in 6 seconds and £3,700. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

I am quite interested! How do these drive?

It would have to drive briliantly to overcome the issues of colour and image*. Sadly, it doesn't.

  • Internet hearsay, personal observation and childish mischievousness. (But I still wouldn't).
I like the colour!
I like the colour too! No experience of driving one but I really like the look of that car. Looks to be in super condition in the photos, nice mileage...very worthy of serious consideration, I think.

We owned one for about 3 years. Only problem we had was a voltage regulator, which was easily and cheaply repaired. They are tested at more like 5.5 0-60 or faster. They do handle decently with good tyres. Ours was the avante garde, so we had the AMG body kit, alloys and 4 pot front brakes. Not the most economical, but drove absolutely amazing.

Bi-turbo cl600 - probably too expensive given the suspension issue. I don't particularly like the tone of the ad either. Interesting though. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-Benz-CL600-V12-...redfaceKgAAOSwZVlXi~m0

These guys used to service my E36 W124 and are great to deal with. Would be very happy to purchase from them.
The ad reads OK to me, just telling it like it is. Is the fracture to the wing really a common occurrence on 215s - it looks like it's been attacked with a disc cutter! If it has no more issues than stated in the ad, it could be a worthwhile purchase with a bit of work.
To be honest I still wouldn't - the advert is honest, but it makes you wonder why a Merc specialist wouldn't have at the faults and then put it back up for its £10k instead.

Some good haggling potential!

I think I have found a better C215 600.

Only going to post this photo as I love this profile -

Wheels look fabulous.

Seems there or there abouts, really.
5+ owners and big V8 aren't on most folks 'must have' list when used car buying...

Perhaps I'm naively imagining a couple of weekends of DIY fettling with Star, changing a single strut and cleaning contacts etc. would be far more cost effective than X hours of garage time. When cars are advertised with a single issue, my stock response is "why don't they fix it?" but with several issues it starts to make sense for them to just move it on. Agreed, some scope for a haggle, but I would want a good test drive and potentially plug it into Star before parting with cash.

Agree on the wheels, but isn't that an early non-twin turbo car? It does look good, but isn't it the case that later, TT, cars are substantially better in many ways, particularly the engine's reliability and bork-potential?

OMG how did I not know the 'not particularly relevant to RR' (X Reg or older ONLY) sales section' existed on Retro Rides?

Some tosh of course, and much below min thread budget (which looks like it), but a few perhaps of interest:

C43 Estate at 5500 is a little toppy on 172k miles but claims to be in fine nick
http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/190924/rare...

Saab corner!

£1500 for a high mileage 9-5 with a lot of interesting engine work (not often up thread's street, but who knows):
http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/191654/1999...

£2095 for a 9-5 Aero with 295bhp:
http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/191932/saab...

And cross-posting just because I can't believe someone would spend £172 then only want £220 for this 9000:

Probably true. Not worth spending time sorting the electrical gremlins to leave the strut and paint/wing unsorted.

Following the broken manifold car last week W221s are my current obsession after Geekman (iirc) suggested higher milage examples were approaching thread budget.

There is a fair choice in the £6.5 - 7.5k range but not so many lower down. Despite the higher purchase price I would have expected the 500s to now be cheaper than the diesels but this is not the case.

Do car auctions for the public still happen?

Yes, I have a local auction in Poole I attend fairly regularly. Is the Anglia Auctions anywhere near you?

You can attend and buy at the big auctions, BCA, Manheim etc but the fees as a private buyer are heavy. Far better to go along with someone who has a trade account and buy on their account to benefit from their lower fees.

The BCA website is good and used to enable you to search for any car across all of their sites. Trade account holders can bid online, but I dont think public auction goers can.

I've spotted a couple of high mileage S600 with the M275 engine for sub £10k. They may be worth considering.

There is BCA in Bedford and a few East Anglian auctions not that far from me, I had heard that fees for private buyers were a problem. Will perhaps go and check some out. The search on BCA shows rich W221 pickings.

Good cars that generation of legacy, although the interior quality and prehistoric 4-speed box may be an issue for some.

Very well built cars though, I always imagined ours to be how an early 90s Mercedes would be now. Lots of quality fixings underneath and well-designed parts for ease of serviceability/durability.

Please bear with me on this.

The definition of barge has been debated lately and I understand there is no definitive. I thus put this forward for consideration. Other ages and mileages are available.

OMG, you searched for that.

Probably ok if you're visually impaired and your driver has no pride.

Definitely a barge. Definitely hideous.

I just can't see past the selection of other barges available at that money which are nicer and not appealing in every way. The earlier DeVille V8s has at least amusement value.
