How cheap would it have to be to pay £500 per year tax though? Keep it for 4 years and that's a bill of £2k, even if you paid £0 for it!
How much per year is your R129 to tax? What about the W124? I might be right in thinking around £300, give or take? If so, it's an extra £800 over 4 years.... I bet you it'd probably save you that in reduced servicing.

But yes, it's definitely a hit. Worth paying if it's something a bit more special.

This popped up near me yesterday. Looks good, not the best advert or the cheapest but could be a find!

Ross makes an excellent point. We all hate that extra tax st, especially as it's based on such a flawed environmental basis, but the reality of it is that it's pretty much irrelevant in the grand scheme of ownership costs.

Slightly off topic but on the subject of Hyundai barges.
This is on the trader with 100 miles on it and its all ready depreciated by about 50%!
How long is it going to take to get to thread budget?

Hello Chaps. I'm a (very) long term lurking non-participant. The reason for my silence is twofold; too stupid to give any worthwhile advice, and too ashamed of my Astra to out myself as an aspiring barge-r (bargeista?).

In short I want a w201 190 but I am picky. I fancy an auto, but keep coming back to this Malachite car because it has the right colour combo, good spec (a/c and leather) and.. well it just looks lovely. In my heart of hearts I think the driving I do would suit a manual car more, too.

Am I sliding into a urine-soaked spiral of confusion or is this a Threadists car? BorniteIdentity, maybe? Can anyone shed light?
I bought my first 190 earlier this year. Ive had a w126 and w124, both great cars (especially regret letting the 560sel go) but the 190 feels very right. The perfect size. I went 2.5 diesel auto. Drives superbly. Very quiet at motorway speeds, not the fastest acceleration but a lot better than the figures suggest, and sits at higher motorway speeds in comparable silence and comfort. You can tell the engineers designed it to be able to cruise long distances.

I bought from mark at mtsv, would recommend checking his site as he really knows his stuff.

I love mine, it literally looks/drives/smells like new. The problem is my ocd kicked in and I spend a grand on it doing totally unnecessary work such as changing the shocks/springs/bushes etc. This prevents me from using it every day as was the plan, hence it has joined the garage collection and the mighty carine e continues the daily duties.

All £235 now. Money spent on servicing 'gets' something whereas tax is just throwing money away which I resent! Especially on a car like that!

Agreed, where do you stop. Currently running 5 cars, if they we all in the higher tax bracket that would be a quite a hike in annual spend. Would need to be something special, the Hyundai does nothing for me.

Less than £300. VED for all pre March 2001 barges is the same - £235 a year each. So the rate for a W124 regardless of engine is the same as for my 944 Turbo, the 500SL and the E39 530i. None of them counts as expensive but as you buy more big-engined cars outside the 'historic' class they do add up - fortunately our Prius gets a freebie, so across four cars its only just over £700 quid a year for the lot.

Not the most dynamic, handsome or luxury car; but a lot for the money!
76k miles, 55 reg and less than 2k? Surely worth a punt for someone?

Alternatively, poor spec not including leather, but after it's cleaned up - could be nice too:

That Cadillac is absolutely tragic.

I dunno, there's something appealing about. I recall they made a fast one, cts-v or something.

The styling isn't great that's for sure, but if you wanted something relatively modern, comfortable and reliable you could do a lot worse at that money.

I am not denying you may get the above (can't speak WRT reliability as have no experience of them) but my point still stands! Lol.
On a side note, been periodically looking for a nice E32 this past couple of years, and the last 6 months in particular, they're getting harder and harder to find.
Wish I hadn't waited for the price to keep going down on the one in Reading on Retro Rides a couple of months back.

That seems remarkably cheap - plenty of scope to spend some money and still be a bargain.

They also have an 850 which, while over budget, looks ok, and a CLK500 within haggling of thread budget. All the adverts read ok too.

ETA - the CLK has a recurring SRS issue at MOT - a sticky tape repair perhaps?
