The engine might be fine and the next time I am having a pint of Allbrite back in 1983 I can impress people with stories of my 3.7 litre engine turning out 255bhp, and independent suspension might raise a few impressed eyebrows at the Lanchester owners club, but just look at it! Look at the door cards and the interior!!
I love General Motors because it gives me the personal assurance that no matter how badly I ever do at life, no matter how deluded I become about my own abilities, no matter how utterly useless I am at a job I am given to do I always know that General Motors exists and as such I can never be "The sttest".
Agreed, but it's 76k/FSH for less than an Archer. We're hardly talking megabucks.I love General Motors because it gives me the personal assurance that no matter how badly I ever do at life, no matter how deluded I become about my own abilities, no matter how utterly useless I am at a job I am given to do I always know that General Motors exists and as such I can never be "The sttest".
I'll stand buy my original statement that it was harsh to say 'I'd rather st in my hands and clap than drive that'.
Mind you I did rather like that Hyundai Grandis a few pages back so I'm a bit short of barge street cred.,..

Yes. It's my car.
I now have both a manual and automatic Mercedes of this vintage. The auto box is very smooth but very lazy. You also pay a hefty mpg penalty for having it. I deliberately sought out a manual because I do 100 miles a day on the A1 and it's definitely a better option. The autos are only 4 speed remember and no overdrive - so the engine is busy and buzzy at speed.
It's different strokes for different folks though: you might find that you want the auto having driven both.
As for my car, it's had an awful lot of money and time spent on it. There are still a few things that I'd like to do, but the w124 is more suitable for my large family and large bottom (and legs)
Good luck on your search.
I suppose the MPG penalty is one of the reasons I'm leaning toward a manual. Although I know it's not important (or, actually, significant) in the grand scheme of things, every time I fill up it would annoy me. The buzzy-ness would irritate me, also.I now have both a manual and automatic Mercedes of this vintage. The auto box is very smooth but very lazy. You also pay a hefty mpg penalty for having it. Looks really busy.To be fair, this was relatively early in the morning, and this was an area farthest from the store, it was very busy close to the store and filling up quite quickly....
Car looked magnificent. Some would say a bit vulgar, but I think it looked great.
In non-barge news (barge replacement news) I was going to wait until the next service to get the auxillary drive belt changed but it was looking a bit cracked and couldn't see when it was last changed so I had another car bill this weekend. £18 for the part, and not a penny labour (mate who runs a garage changed it). Happy days.
I was also concerned about the battery because it's 6 years old, got them to check it with a battery tester and he said it's fine and no need to change it at the moment. A decent Bosch battery for it is £75 anyway....unlike the £175 for the E65!
So that means I've spent a monstrous £31 on the car so far! I'm sure the 745i would have cost me that by now I'm loving 45mpg vs 25mpg too. Though I'll admit I do miss a creamy smooth and pokey V8!
It won't be forever, I'll be back in a Best Smoker Barge at some point, and I'll keep looking at this thread to keep my interest up

They don't come more bargey than a 6 litre Mercedes Benz.
Looks like ownership may prove "entertaining" though

My luxo barge / surf bus search continues. Do you think the two errors noted are significant? Does it look lopsided at the rear or is it just the picture? I usually stick to private sales preferably from marque enthusiasts but at least this guy is up front that there are some issues.

Talking of MB V12 madness: I know this car is well over budget (but probably should not be!) but r129sl and I exchanged views on it a few months back. It has been for sale at £8k for at least a year, but when I dropped in to see it at the tail end of last year it was "in storage in the Isle of Man" and "I'm in no rush to sell as they're only going up in value". I have kept an eye on it, and it's still for sale but now at just under £11k - it appears he's correct and they are on the up!!
