I like the leather

Apart from the obvious clocking, what could possibly go wrong... Why doesnt this flag up somewhere as being an issue? And why doesn't the dealer mention it?
Front passenger door and wing look to be different colours.

After a soggy morning on the bike and the fact it really doesn't have isofix for the baby I think my barge musings must now become reality.

Except they all seem to be up North. What gives?

And why has some chump painted the centre of the front bumper black?

The cynical (Midlands') view would be that posh southerners can afford fancy new cars which head north with each more impoverished purchaser - but in reality it's Sod's law that when you are looking for a car, there either are none available or they're miles away. Buy one and dozens will appear around the corner.

Or those of us North of the Watford Gap are happy with our lot and confidently, with nothing to prove, have more sense than buying at the top of the depreciation curve.

Alternatively it's the opposite effect of buying a something - then you suddenly start seeing them everywhere.

Since this is a page of interesting colour combos I decided to see what Individually specced cars ebay has for us.

Nice

Oh.

Fabulously coloured 530i.

Or at least the bits that aren't rusty and/or covered in duct tape.

When I see a barge I want to look at it's always somewhere between the 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock radials out from the M25, which makes them most inconvenient for me to get to.

I didn't struggle for places to stay or traffic in May during the glorious weather. A fabulous route that I'll be trying to do every year.
I'm sure the hotels are loving the business but I used to enjoy just turning up at the Applecross Inn and booking a room or worst case calling a few days before. No chance of that these days. Also don't constrain yourself to the NC500 lots of other equally as good roads in the west.
The boat guy in Shieldaig told me that the Applecross community is having a vote about coming out of NC500 because they can't cope with the numbers. Everyone I spoke to about it said it had never been busier and that there was a shortage of accommodation, that people were sleeping in their cars and stuff like that.

It will also be tiresome if dheads start driving far too fast in so-called super cars and stuff. While I admire those cars, they're all too big, too fast, too noisy for the public road. 99.9% of the people who own them are tts. And they'll attract policing which will spoil it for the rest of us.
Wow, interesting! To be honest if the route goes anywhere near Applecross they'll probably still suffer - a fantastic road, mesmerising view and some really good grub in the pub will make it a must-see.
Oa: I was impressed by the Coastal Kitchen at Shieldaig this time. We went a few years ago and it was not so hot, but this recent trip we tried it twice and it was good.

The Bealach na Gaoithe (pass of the winds) between Torridon and Diabaig in my view is better than the Bealach na Bà or Applecross road. But, of course, it is not part of a circuit, Diabaig being a dead end, albeit one with a nice café restaurant and a very scenic harbour. To be honest, I rather prefer the high speed open vista routes, like Achnasheen to Gruinnard Bay or Garve to Ullapool, I used to love covering ground along those roads in my 500 SEC, the car absolutely in its element, the long-travel suspension soaking up the undulations with that "sense of indomitability" that Mel Nichols so accurately identified in "Champagne Country".
Fantastic, I will certainly try the Bealach na Gaoithe and the Coastal Kitchen.

I collected the w124 this evening. Dirty, rusty but it drives so well. A full service, two new tyres, , alignment, and a proper transmission flush (yes it will need to be done again when I get the spring kit) plus a general check over and tidy up have done it the world of good.

Tommy, my mechanic is also off on holiday tomorrow. I asked him where... to applecross, he's taking his bike there stopping for lunch at guess-where! I have roadtrip support (in a way!).

The further you travel for a car, the better it will turn out to be. Never buy anything from remotely nearby. Rule of barging.

I usually go with that, but my E39 was just an £8.50 train ride away in Torquay and it's great. (The car, Torquay's a sthole)

I've noticed that, in fact unless it's over 60 miles away it's rarely worth looking at

Manual estate with 272hp from an NA 3.0 for a 0-60 of 6.5 and a 47.1 extra urban mpg figure. Appealing.

What an odd car. Clearly a total shed, I've never seen an E39 quite as rusty, but... remarkably good condition Style 37's still shod with Contintental tyres?!

I should keep a notebook of all these great factoids ready for next time I'm up there...
Gille Brighde is where you want to go if you're in the Torridon area, cracking road as mentioned above too.

And how on earth is it up to £820 already? Surely that would need huge amounts of money spending on it to put right, and apart from the wheels I wouldn't have thought it would have many valuable spares.

Excellent. Enjoy. Better safe than sorry.

And on that subject, there are what seem to be 100 miles of average speed cameras heading into Inverness. Properly tedious frown

Indeed, I used to go via Inverness, stay a night in a nice hotel and spend lots of money. I have not done so after they introduced the average speed cameras.

I very nearly went all the way to Fife for a Saab 9-5. Thankfully, one turned up locally biggrin
