I don't think the auto gearboxes in the barges from the sort of vintage favoured here are particularly weak though, are they? I can see people not liking them, but not trusting them - especially if you're as handy with spanners as you seem to be - seems a little strange I'd have thought.
It's just a stigma I have with them.
My E34 is an auto, but only because I needed an estate to move house 2500 miles with and it popped up locally.
Given the choice, I'd have a manual version of it.

My major problem with bigger engined barges (with high miles) is the auto gearboxes.
I just can't trust them.
I fix trucks (currently boats) for a living and I am happy with what can go wrong with a manual gearbox in a car and now to repair but auto gearboxes in the past 15 years have gone ridiculously complicated and so more difficult and expensive to repair.

I think it's largely the 5 speed boxes which are the issue. They're seemingly "weak" across the board. Although I think far more survive than die. The later 6 speed boxes are much better, and don't have any major issues as far as I'm aware. Not sure about the newer 7/8 speed boxes though. How is the 7G-tronic in the mid 2000 era Mercs?

Wow, it almost looks new! Stupendous value for £5k.
It's an 18 year old Jag? Should be about 1k.
For a tired 3.2 perhaps.

Elegant, immaculate, opulent, quick and cool. And it's all yours for less than a Dacia Sandero. A fking steal in other words.
Ok so maybe I was exaggerating a bit... but my tired 3.2 was around £450, so I still think this one's over t' top!
Try this one?

Wow. That is brilliant. What a piece of kit for less than a Dacia Logan.

Fantastic you bought it, hope the vibrating noise or rumble is nothing too serious.

Could I have first refusal when you come to sell ?

Oh and let's have some pics

No pictures yet as it has some stupid looking 'german' plates which ruin the look of the car. Also one odd alloy....

Replacing the engine (getting one from a scrapper will be a lot cheaper than a full rebuild)

Obviously it's only a guess but I'd suggest that's likely a big end bearing failure on No.1. AJ-V8 lore says that they are prone to that due to oil starvation when owers let the level get low.

I'll stop picture whoring here I promise, but as my Romanian friends have done such a cracking job cleaning the old girl for 15 quid, I thought the least I could do was flash up a couple more.
