Worth knowing...thanks.
I wonder if anyone has tried them on a BMW? I'm just wondering if they'd throw up fault readings on the OBC?
Ahh yes, those ones will cause an error, well noticed, sorry. You need the ones with the canbus bits or the canbus extra bits as shown below. Makes it quite expensive unfortunately.I wonder if anyone has tried them on a BMW? I'm just wondering if they'd throw up fault readings on the OBC?

So, as said earlier, I installed the new batteries in the 8-Series. No problems there.
But, crippling misery that I am, I decided to see if the two batteries that I'd removed from the car and that probably have only covered about 50 actual road miles in their lifetime could be salvaged by a slow charge out on the work bench. Why throw something away when it has hardly been used and might prove useful in the future. Right?
Some hours later, I step outside in the direction of the garage (closed as it was at the time) and a good 20 yards away catch a feint whiff of Eau-de-Battery in the air. I open the garage door....and fk me! The smell of your school chemistry lab gone wrong was absolutely over-powering. Like a wall!
Now that st is explosive in a confined space, yeah? It tells you so on every battery. It tells you to "Avoid Sparks" and "Don't Smoke" and stuff, stuff? So, the first thing I wanna do is switch off all the chargers at the wall...right? Which I did....except for the one that actually connected to the battery in question...which is actually visibly 'steaming' acid out of its vent hole at this time.
Thinking I had switched it off, I pull the positive electrode off...to be accompanied by an unexpected BIG SPARK...and three seconds of my life flashing before my eyes!
Can you imagine the local newspaper headlines? "Local Village Bargist's Freak Tragedy Sparks Enquiry".

Remove NEGATIVE first......P
It didn't say anywhere: "Later on, when the air within a 1/4 mile radius is full of explosive gas, make sure that you have actually switched-off, rather than just think you have switched-off the wall socket..."
Or maybe that was on the bit where it said: "Important: See Overleaf"
Derin,
My Elise stunk to high heaven a few weeks ago and I couldn't work out why. Turns out the battery was dead and the alternator and trickle charger were working overtime to keep on top of it. It too was leaking acid from the vent hole and the smell is quite unmistakable!
On a happier note, how lovely is the number plate font on the red W126 300SE on the previous page? The '9' is particularly attractive!

On a more serious note...and I hope potentially helpful.
Along with not being able to see the way home in the dark from France, we had to endure a lack of air-conditioning for the whole time that we were there. The time before last out we replaced both the pusher-fan and the 'hedgehog' on the E39. The air-con worked thereafter but by the next time it was gone again.
Fearing the worst and a leak somewhere expensive I decided...returning to the miser theme...to seek an alternative.
This stuff sounded like a 'crock' but misers don't necessarily think like rational people.
At £24.95 (with free delivery) it 'hurts' but less so than pulling out and replacing your condenser or paying someone to pull out the middle of your car to replace a £0.02 O-ring on your evaporator...right?
So, I paid £24.95 (with free delivery) for this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400288086540?_trksid=p20...
Whilst thinking: "Well done it again, you tt...why don't you just take up the hobby of flushing £25 down the toilet every day, videoing it and get millions of YouTube subscribers to follow you doing it?"
Anyway, so the stuff arrived a couple of days ago. Now, the first which they didn't tell me in the ad was: "This won't work if the compressor isn't turning..." Thanks...there goes £24.95 immediately...because mine isn't.
However, on BMWs at least and probably most other cars too, the compressor won't spin unless there's actually sufficient gas in the system to start off with. I know this.
So, literally 5 secs of squirt from an EZ Chill cylinder (you can get them from Halfords) and the compressor kicked into life and we were ready to go!
Now, a quick word of warning here:
The instructions tell you to activate the container briefly to expel the air in the tube first. Logical.
I did that in the hallway. It takes a lot of force to press the aerosol button...and then it suddenly goes off!
What I would advice is that you don't activate it whilst facing your wife's best, cream coloured raincoat that she likes so much. You see, whilst largely clear and invisible, this gel contains something that fluoresces under UV light.
It literally EJACULATED (big-time) all over my wife's coat. Mercifully, she'd popped out to the supermarket at the time and I wiped it off as best as I could. However, the UV torch that I'd simultaneously ordered arrived today and I can confirm that the fluorescent additive does work.
Anyway...I digress.
So, I put the stuff in and then recharged the system with the EZ Chill.
So far, two days in, it has remained absolutely bloody freezing with the A/C on!
I'll report back as to whether it lasts....but it really has so far. And I've checked with the UV light and can see no signs of fluorescence other that where I spilt it near the inlet port....and on my wife's coat.
Worth a go if you need to?

Thanks Jimmy...I'm not too far from there either (nr Oswestry) but if you're very near and could have a drive by and a nosey...that would be great! Many thanks.
r129SL has now got me worried that whilst the website may look like this:
http://www.salopiancarstorage.co.uk/gallery.html
The actual premises might look like this:
The "classic car enthusiast" owner's own car (and his pet) like this:
And the man himself like this:
Which would be less than ideal at £16/week for the privilege?
I didn't realise you were in Shropshire. I know Oswestry well but I live near Bridgnorth.r129SL has now got me worried that whilst the website may look like this:

I would check Salopian out but thinking it over, I doubt it would be appropriate to have someone snooping around if they're supposed to be protecting cars. I'm happy to have a look at the place, but as I'm not a customer, it probably wouldn't be right. I have storage I can offer but nothing indoors and nothing insured so I doubt it would be right for your cars

If anyone needs proof that this stuff does at least fluoresce under UV light:
I hadn't realised that my 'rubbing' had actually made it worse (as you can see); nor that it had actually soiled my work jacket situated behind her raincoat and even the wall beyond both!
You're going to need a better story. Stains like that, she'll never buy the air con gas can excuse.I hadn't realised that my 'rubbing' had actually made it worse (as you can see); nor that it had actually soiled my work jacket situated behind her raincoat and even the wall beyond both!

It's scary isn't it? You just wouldn't think one little battery could created so many fumes! My Elise stunk to high heaven a few weeks ago and I couldn't work out why. There's a serious lesson there?
