Brilliant anecdotes Derin! There are many fora, some on Pistonheads, where I'd be unsurprised to read the words 'ejaculated', 'rubbing' and 'soiling' in a post but I'll be honest I didn't think it'd be the Smoker Barge thread. Unless it was accompanying a classified for a pre-Sacco'd 124 in tangerine with teal velour and hub caps.

Just me? Moving on...

While we're lowering the tone I'm curious as to the phrase in bottom left of the picture?

Derin,

My Elise stunk to high heaven a few weeks ago and I couldn't work out why. Turns out the battery was dead and the alternator and trickle charger were working overtime to keep on top of it. It too was leaking acid from the vent hole and the smell is quite unmistakable!

On a happier note, how lovely is the number plate font on the red W126 300SE on the previous page? The '9' is particularly attractive!
It's scary isn't it? You just wouldn't think one little battery could created so many fumes!

There's a serious lesson there?
You're not talking about the physics lesson in which we learn that the expansion ration of a liquid to a gas is typically of the order of 1:1000?

I guess this is actually at the very heart of our hobby.

What I would advice is that you don't activate it whilst facing your wife's best, cream coloured raincoat that she likes so much. You see, whilst largely clear and invisible, this gel contains something that fluoresces under UV light.

It literally EJACULATED (big-time) all over my wife's coat. Mercifully, she'd popped out to the supermarket at the time and I wiped it off as best as I could. However, the UV torch that I'd simultaneously ordered arrived today and I can confirm that the fluorescent additive does work. smile
I'm sure you'll find out soon enough when she find out that her favourite coat has been transformed into a bukkake special.

But seriously, couldn't you kill the power to the barn from the main house?

Stumbled across this BMW E60 545i - SE, full pipe & slippers spec and strangely I like it even more for that. Does the E60 have any major bork concerns - has anyone experience of how it compares to an E39? I'd love another E39 but dread rust, bushes/shimmy and cooling systems. And rust. E60s running on petrol with proper cylinder counts (i.e 6 or more) prices are falling well into thread territory now, and may be more palatable for the tool-shy bargista (i.e moi).

That's what I thought. I always liked the XK8 and while everyone else seems to think the design is getting better with time I disagree. It just looks flabby and dated to me now, and the line the rear bumper makes is absolutely terrible. They seem to be as cramped and as compromised as an XJS but without the charm.

I wasn't a fan either, but way back when I had one, mine had all the Paramount Performance mods. Totally transformed the car.

Unfortunately this one was written off. Whilst stationary, I might add frown

From the MoT database, it appears that it's back on the road and being poorly maintained.

There is a long running V8 E60 thread somewhere which contains everything you will need to know so you should really ask there as it's where all the E60/61 V8 owners hang out.
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I'm not a fan for several reasons so my personal take may not be the same as yours. For me they are a massive step backwards from the E39 in terms of general quality, ride and refinement. Other people love them to bits and most of those are on the other thread. My long-serving BMW indy, who's looked after my BMWs for the last 15 years, reckons they're amongst the worst cars ever made by BMW and that the F10 range is where you want to go when you're all out of E39s.

One advantage the E60 has over the F10 is its proper spare wheel well, so if you put them on good non run-flat types of sensible proportions then they can be made more refined, both in terms of ride quality and road noise, than when they came out of the factory on RFTs and (often over-wheeled).

But as I said, contrasting views are available.

The E60 shares the E39's susceptibility to shimmy and judder if the suspension isn't kept right up the the mark. They have not shown as much rust as a lot of E39s, but then they're not yet the same age so the jury is out on that one. I believe they have all metal radiators avoiding the plastic issues of the E39, but of course any old car of this nature is likely to need a fair bit of cooling system refurbishment at some point: water pump (electric on most E60s), hoses, etc etc.

The later engines have not generally been as reliable as their forebears. There is a thread here listing some of the common issues with the V8s of that era.
