Stumbled across this BMW E60 545i - SE, full pipe & slippers spec and strangely I like it even more for that. Does the E60 have any major bork concerns - has anyone experience of how it compares to an E39? I'd love another E39 but dread rust, bushes/shimmy and cooling systems. And rust. E60s running on petrol with proper cylinder counts (i.e 6 or more) prices are falling well into thread territory now, and may be more palatable for the tool-shy bargista (i.e moi).

I like this. Others will moan it's pre LCI, although it means cheap tax. Can't compare to an E39 but sporadic electric faults, AC too, suspension wear and oil leaks all a concern, some or none of which may be apparent on viewing. Not ideal to have variable servicing either as owners can be slack. My FiL's 530 just threw a £2.5k bill for dash out AC repairs, and tyre sensors go for a pastime.

I don't think variable servicing is a problem, it's the owners. BMWs have had variable servicing for donkeys years, although to a lesser extent. Even the E28 5 series had service intervals based on how you drive it.

Oil leaks will be the main concern with the 545i. Whilst I'm not exceptionally familiar with the E60, I ran a 745i with the same engine for almost 30k miles. Engine was a lovely thing to use, but oil leaks are very common, but rarely drastic. The dreaded coolant leak is no longer very dreaded, as there is a pretty cheap fix these days, meaning a 4 figure bill is now sortable for just a few hundred quid. Other than that...just the usual suspension items. I'm not sure if it applies to the saloons but I think E61 tourings had problems with water ingress into the boot/battery area.

What are people's thoughts on this? I know there's a whole load of reasons why you shouldn't, miles, VED, potentially dodgy dealer etc but I'm intrigued it would make a good replacement for my trusty volvo.

Is that engine and gearbox combination a good one? Do they do high miles?

My interest in those as next family bus was aroused by an earlier poster on this thread.

Are you actually after a 300se? I know a friend is trying to sell his and is having all kinds of trouble with people messing him about.

Mod's this is not an advert, just seeking some advice

After 3.5 years (and with a house refurbishment sitting on my CC's) I'm starting to look at moving on my E39 540i but prices seem all over the place.

Anybody know a ball-park figure for a late sport? - 131k miles, full SH, new PS3's and has had all of the common issues sorted over the past 4 years (cooling, gearbox, suspension etc.) - It's as standard but has a few factory options, silver trim, widescreen NAV, M-Parallels, privicy glass & sunroof amongst other bits.

All good condition barring age related marks, a small key line on the rear quarter (courtesy of a mentally unstable neighbour) and alloys needing a refurb.

Where should I look at pitching it?

I'd probably not use that shot for an advert. I agree that prices are all over the place. Early low mileage cars seem to be up around £6-7k. A friend just sold a shabby but essentially sound one for £2400.

Indeed I have some proper shots somewhere which should be much better - wasn't trying to break the posting rules so didn't want to look like an advert!

I'd try around 4 I think. You should achieve within 500 or so.

That has been listed / sold / rejected / relisted at least half a dozen times over the last 8 months.

Something must be wrong with either the car or the seller.

Mine is on eBay right now as we speak on a no reserve auction. Watch it and see how it goes. It's the light green lpg tourer 540

Finally, after 9 months of stop/start mechanical refurbishment and repairs, I got the E34 540i back this morning!woohoo

After a bit of a wash off I've taken it straight to my body and paint man for the full repaint. It doesn't look pretty yet but it drives fantastically. Still a quick car, in my opinion.

Or search for one and they click on "Sold Listings" to get an idea of they've gone for recently.

Yes, I've watched the price come slowly down. The seller also seems to be a car breaker. He's local though so I may go and look this weekend.

It's also the cheapest R class I could see.
