As per all other successful brands. Where would Porsche (at times worlds most profitable brand) be if they stuck to their guns on over engineered air cooled 911's? The 924/44 saved them, the 928 saved them, then the 996/986 made them profitable. The Cayenne is their top seller. The problem with playing o the PH market is most of us don't buy new cars, we buy better older ones...
Dont think thats quite the fair comparison a cayenne is hardly cheap unlike that 2 series turd.Regardless the brand is getting diluted and cheapened thats a fact no one one here can argue with,
Yes bmw are still making money but IMHO They are trading on past glory.

These companies are in business to make a profit, not to keep a few internet geeks happy.
But N/A straight six engines and RWD used to be BMW's USP when they just make gopping mpv's for posters on mumsnet they chip away at their heritage, cachet and USP.If they slowly make half the range FWD they'll just end up another vauxhall.. And then the badge snobs who buy the crumby financed 2 series to show off to the neighbours wont want one anymore!! Short sighted business practice IMHO

I was convinced they'd be a flop, in fact for ages after the official release, I didn't see any on the roads at all... then about a year later, BOOM! they're everywhere. And looking downright horrible at the same time. Looks like the [horribly unfunny] joke is on me
My boss had one as a courtesy car while his M4 was in for service and got some grief for it:ZesPak said:

I fear reality will be different to utopia. It will be OK on motorways, duals and A-Roads but in urban situations pedestrians will probably have priority and it will be stop start mayhem as they randomly walk out in front of you causing you to spill your latte mochachocadingdong.
Considering my commute is about 5 minutes urban and 55 minutes motorway (if there aren't any jams), I can live with that.I'm a big BMW fan and the 2-series does bother me a bit, but I did get one as a courtesy car a while back while my M3 was in and it was "OK". I don't want BMW to make "OK" cars but it was fine for what it is.
I personally see it being well suited for the crowd who would buy the old A-Class. People who want a tiny MPV, but one with a reasonable level of luxury inside. It certainly felt much more premium than the equivalent Vauxhall/Ford etc...
Truthfully they've made FWD cars for years, but just under the MINI brand which I suppose let them get away with it.

the trend for boring colours on cars... look at any car park today and it's a mass of silver, black, white and (50 shades of) grey. Interiors seem to only come in black or grey... talk about lemmings
Looking at 20 year old cars for sale, it's not really a recent trend is it? I agree though, almost always buying second hand cards you have to look hard and far for something else than white, grey or black.

Literally everything in black. What is the attraction in this?
